Rocker Corgan to reform Smashing Pumpkins

Singer Billy Corgan said on Tuesday he plans to revive The Smashing Pumpkins, his Grammy-winning band which broke up in 2000 after more than a decade of blending alternative rock with the avant-garde.

In full-page advertisements in Chicago newspapers, the bald-headed Corgan said, "I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams."

He did not say which if any of the band's former members would be involved in the revived group, which broke through with albums such as "Gish" and "Siamese Dream."

The Pumpkins' top selling album was "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" which came out in 1995, but as the 1990s progressed their work became increasingly obscure as tensions arose in the group.

They broke up over differences among its four members and Corgan has since jumped from project to project but failed to match his early success.

Corgan, based in Chicago, has just released a solo album, "TheFutureEmbrace" on Reprise Records.

He did not say when he would try to reform the Pumpkins but the new album "represents a new beginning, not an ending. It picks up the thread of the as-yet-unfinished work and charter of The Smashing Pumpkins," he said.

I'm a huge SP fan, and to be honest, unless Iha, and Chamberlin are there is just won't be the same, and as for Melissa Auf Der Maur, she's doing her own thing now, which I enjoy, but might be tough to get her back, and frankly, god knows what's happened to D'arcy now.

I'm a huge fan of his so I'll leave my fanboy schlock to myself...but in short, I admire that he's been able to try new things. He says time and time again how he knows he can write great alt-rock songs, but that was SP and not where he is now.

That said...my friend, who's an even bigger fan is probably driving to Chicago to camp out at the Metro at this very moment, heh.

Finally! It's about time Corgan got his head on straight. But, pretty much like everyone else has said, it indeed won't be the same without Jimmy and James. D'arcy, well, has dropped off the face of the earth and Corgan will have to find a replacement.

Compare "Adore" to their other albums, then come back. Roll through tracks like "Jellybelly", "I Am One", and "An Ode to No One", then come back.

i shouldve said my comment was based mainly on assumptions..im a fan of them but not hardcore to any extent....they have some very good songs....its just usualy the case that the drummer doesnt add/subtract to the music (except for the obvious...The Who, LZ...ect)

Trust me, that is not the case with the Pumpkins - there's a reason Adore tanked. Jimmy Chamberlain is thunder wrapped in skin.

Smashing Pumpkins was pretty much Billy and Jimmy. Jimmy would create the drumtrack and Billy would play over it then overdub bass and rhythm guitar. Those two did almost the entire Siamese Dream without James and D'arcy.

Even so, I hope it's the original band again and they back away from the electronica stuff. IMO, everything after MC&TIS sucked.

I just hope the can reform the entire original group. And hopefully this time corgan won't be such an egotistical ass.

But judging from the ad "I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams." if he does manage to get them all back together, they'll last 1 album together at most, before they implode.

I just read an article in some magazine last week (forget what magazine it was) that had an interview with him. He said he hadn't spoke with either Iha or D'Arcy since the Pumpkins broke up. He said Jimmy is still his right hand man and I think he even plays with him on his solo album (at least that was the impression I got from the article). So I'd say Jimmy would definitely be on board. He mentioned that he would like to have some kind of reunion, but he didn't think it was time yet as there were deep wounds between the other band members that he didn't think had healed yet.

He still claims JC as his best friend...and I saw the Jimmy Chamberlain Complex a few weeks ago...that was some interesting stuff. Rock-jazz-fusion kind of group...I listen to a lot of music so I enjoyed it for the most part but I think a lot of people were thinking "wtf".

At one time, IIRC, he blamed James Iha in particular for the breakup. We'll see if Iha gets asked back.

From what little I've heard, Jimmy Chamberlain seems like a very good drummer. At the same time, Billy Corgan might be a good songwriter, but I can't stand his singing.

I doubt they can get Iha and D'arcy back, which would make this pointless, but if they can it will be so fvcking awesome.
