On a side note, it might have been a good idea to check on repairing it yourself, rather than suffer through the insurance crisis. Not to mention this will probably be on the vehicle's carfax if/when you try to sell it later.

Looking at cost, I'd say fenders should set you back ~125-150/ea, a hood probably ~300-400, and the grill for ~50-80. Paint would probably be at least 500. So, probably fixable for $1,300, as long as there was no additional damage.

I did a front bumper/hood/fender on a '94 T-Bird V8, and by doing my own labor (was easy, really), saved a ton of money and kept it off my insurance.

LOL....do you even realize how much labor costs are? $1,300.....what a joke. That was pretty funny.

Try parking on the same hill, pulling the parking brake as you usually do, and holding down the clutch to disengage the engine. Maybe get a friend to push on the back of the car to see if it can get moved...maybe someone bumped you while parallel parking?

That said, it is an oddball situation, and it shouldn't slip out of gear in the first place.

However, when you're on a hill, you SHOULD park with your wheels facing the correct direction, so that if all else fails you won't do damage.

turning into the curb only works where there is a curb.

I think his point was do it yourself, save on the labor... but obviously, your cost on time.

accidents rarely show up on carfax actually...usually only for dealership jobs.

People think paint and body is cheap, but quality parts and a decent paint job doesn't come cheap. Some are happy with rattlecan jobs in their backyards though.

Actually thats is not so true anymore. A lot of states report accidents now and car fax picks them up.

When i was looking for our car and my sister in laws car, car fax showed a pile of accidents for a lot of cars that only had minor parking lot type scraps and little fender benders. I think NY is bad/good about reporting all accidents.

If they are paying up to $30 then use pricelines name your own price and put in $30 and see what ya get. Just use your credit card as most offer free rental insurance on car rentals.

Yeah, I'm a cheap bastard :) You must have completely missed the part where I noted my experience doing this crap myself.

FWIW, I've used aftermarket body parts for domestic vehicles for myself and family with ZERO problems. Perfect fit/finish. This has been for :

Ford Taurus
Ford Mustang
Ford Thunderbird
Buick Lesabre

Are the aftermarket fenders/hoods that bad for imports? I did a CF hood for a 5g Prelude, it was perfect, and I also replaced the FL fender, though that was Honda OEM.

i picked up a rental last night - Ford Five Hundred aka Taurus. $30.24/day, and i declined the $17.99/day insurance. my impressions:

looks - remarkably similar to every other sedan

interior - strictly playskool. once again, i am ashamed to be an american. any modern car will have a lot of plastic, but this is 100% petroleum. i am shocked at how low-grade the plastic in this interior is. the rattling wood trim across the dash and center console? plastic. the brushed aluminium shifter and door handles? plastic.
the dashboard is reminds me of those 5 foot wide sandbox turtles, but in beige. there's a compartment in the center of the dash that bears a striking resemblance to the george foreman grill. good for sandwiches, lousy for anything else.

the seat uppers use 2 different kinds of vinyl (why not just the softer of the 2? oh, it's cheaper). the seats are fairly comfortable, with power in every direction and 2 position memory for the driver only. the seats are heated, the settings being "Too Hot" and "WTF Why?". you won't touch the side bolsters unless you weigh 350 pounds or more. when unlocking the car, the seat moves all the way forward, and the seat back reclines almost fully. ???? being 6 feet tall, i cannot enter the car like that. to steal a line from clarkson, "like it's a chaise lounge, and i'm some kind of victorian prostitute". when entering and exiting the vehicle, take car not to rip your knee cap off with the steering column adjustment lever, as it protrudes from the steering column even when locked, and is menacingly pointy.

the controls are slightly worse than average. the turn signal stalk is unusually far from the wheel, and the wiper stalk is far too complicated. the directionals make a beep-bong beep-bong sound, which should be good for the elderly. the headlights have an "automatic" setting, for when you have no idea if you want headlights or not. driving home at sunset left this thing completely flustered.

driving - when backing, i have no idea where the back of the car is. steering is VERY quick at low speeds, normal at high speeds. there is approximately zero feel coming through the wheel, as if it weren't hooked up to anything. the brakes come on too hard and too fast, but at least they will stop the car. the engine is weak. i can't tell if it has a narrow power band or what. the transmission is absolute rubbish: any kind of acceleration send it into an epileptic fit. simply trying to keep a constant speed, or constant following distance, will provoke downshifts. mash the gas pedal, and....nothing happens. a second (feels like an eternity) later, the car is in too low a gear and the motor redlines (i assume it's in the red. the tach doesn't have any red, but the needle shoots to 6500 out of 7000.)

in the end, it gets me where i'm going.
