Smash Burger - AWESOME

Thought about trying it, but the generic logo was a turn off. I looked them up and I'll try them next time I have the chance. Hearing people say the burgers are better than Five Guys, hopefully it'll live up to that as I really liked Five Guys burgers.
 
Tried Smash Burger once, wasn't too impressed. Do enjoy some Five Guys, and In-n-Out (wish they actually had them here in CO), and Old School (lot like In-n-Out).
 
Ok, I tried them earlier tonight, and wasn't just disappointed, it was outright awful, in my opinion. I can get that quality of burger from McDonald's (and at least at McDonalds the meat isn't falling apart as though they injected foam into it), and while they use other better ingredients for the most part, but that couldn't make it taste any better. Nowhere near Five Guys level, oh and were also more expensive (was able to get twice as much food at Five Guys for like $10 more). I would have guessed it was just I got a bad burger, but everyone else got the same quality and no one was impressed.
 
I'm pretty sure five guys has the more expensive burger, fries, and soda. I don't know how anyone could think smash burger was awful. I'd say it was a mistake on their part but I don't know how they could mess up that badly.

Five guys was like $32 for 4 burgers and two orders of fries (which if you've eaten there you know how much fries that is) and drinks for 3 people. Smash Burger was like $25 for two burgers, 2 sides (one an order of fries that was both much smaller in quantity, and lesser in quality in my opinion to the fries from Five Guys, the other was stir fried veggies I think, which were apparently not very good either), and two drinks. Neither one is what you'd call inexpensive at all, but Smash Burger was a worse value.

If it hadn't been for the other people having the same experience (a couple of the people basically never complain about the quality of food, and even they said it wasn't very good), I would have guessed there was something wrong. Also, it looked pretty much exactly like the ones in pictures. I'm fairly certain that's just how they make them. Its almost more like bad sausage patty than hamburger.

A shame too, as I like the rest, just the actual meat of the burger itself was not good. Maybe I'll give it another chance sometime, but its not likely to be anytime soon after this experience.
 
update:

🙁 I went back yesterday. Its now been open about a week, and major dissapointment. This time the burger was cooked all the way through and it made all the difference. It seemed like the burger was extra smashed because it was hanging out of the bun a lot more than last time, which was annoying to begin with. Now with the generic overcooked burger, I'm downgrading this place big time. The onion rings were ok. I didn't like the fried pickles. Five Guys takes back the crown...their overcooked meat tastes better
 
We have 2 that i know of here in Overland Park area. Ive only been once and it was good. Different then Five Guys but hard to say wether better. Maybe equal but different.
 
We had a Smashburger open up here a few months ago. I finally made it out there yesterday. Man, that shit is so good! The rosemary and garlic fries were the BOMB, the burger was fantastic too! So long Five Guys!
 
Smashburger was open in Lawrence for about a year and a few months and closed. If you can't make it in a college town, there's something wrong with your store....

this is like our first trip to Red Robin. 2nd time around was a disappointment. Haven't gone back.

Wait, they served you undercooked hamburger the first time?! That's incredibly dumb and risky.
 
Have a Smash Burger nearby and the place is always dead. I've gone twice (different locations) and the burgers were okay but the fries were terrible. I don't think it's worth going back for what they charge. Five Guys is nearby too and does get a bit more business. In-N-Out still reigns supreme in the area and is normally where I go. If I do sit-down and enjoy a "gourmet" burger I like going to Slater's 50/50. It helps that they usually have a killer draft list too.

100% agree. I just get people who say spending 10+ bucks on a burger fries and coke is worth it. ive tried both and honestly i think Wendys makes a much better burger and at a significant cheaper price.
 
smashburger is my daughter's favorite restaurant. the kids meal for her is like $5 i think. unfortunately, they really undercooked the burger for my younger daughter last time and now we don't go there anymore.

i usually get the NJ Big Smash with Smash Fries.
 
I went to Smashburger the other day, and it was okay. The burger wasn't as good as Five Guys. Smashburger puts too much of certain toppings (such as onions) on it. I considered grilled onions, but I balked when their nutrition facts listed them as adding 110 calories... 😱. I wasn't sure why until I saw how many they give you. Sweet baby Jesus, the onions take up almost as much volume as the beef itself.

One thing I do have to say is... their smashfries (note: not the regular fries) beat the pants off Five Guys' fries. Five Guys' fries are just too bland and boring, and I don't care much for the cajun fries (at Five Guys). For some reason, Smashburger also charges 50 cents more for cajun fries... is it really that hard to season fries? 😕

I do think that Smashburger is more expensive as well, but I think that's also on purpose. As one of my coworkers put it, it's like a mix between Cheeburger Cheeburger and Five Guys, and it comes with the premium. The biggest benefit to Smashburger is that unlike Five Guys, they actually have chicken sandwiches. If you still want a "burger" (I use that term very loosely here) and fries, you can save ~200 calories by going with chicken instead of beef. Helps to make up for the grilled onions!

I've always been confused by this. My coworkers and I go out to eat for lunch often, and most places let you choose how to cook your burger. I've always been told that pink is fine for cuts of meat, because the inside is not exposed to air, but that isn't true for ground meat. Since burgers are made from ground meat, you would want it to be fully cooked.

Is that right?

Although, what about the whole "just because it's pink doesn't mean it's undercooked" thing? However, I doubt that burger flippers are sitting there with meat thermometers to ensure that it reached... 150F (I think that's right... and 165F for poultry).
