Smart Watches

I've had several. I'm a tech guy and love gadgets, but just can't seem to integrate a smart watch into my life. They seem like a solution to a question nobody asked.

i have this smartwatch and it is an awesome replacement for my Pebble. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CRSK5DM/
unbelievable how it can lasts 2+ weeks even with the screen always on.

all i use it for is receiving text, caller ID for me to ignore spams or people that can wait without taking the phone out of pocket, telegram alerts from my smart home such as when the kids turn on or off the TV (they're not allowed to watch 15+ mins)

I'm on my second smartwatch. Went with Apple this time around, but like Fritzo, I'm having problems using it daily.

I wasn't interested in them at all until this fall when I was at the mall and walked into the Fossil store. They had some on display there and I actually liked the ones they had there.

I was close to buying one afterwards but just haven't yet. I like these the most (Fossil Gen5 and Samsung Galaxy Watch):

But I watched some YouTube video about the upcoming (supposedly) Google Watch and I think I wanna wait for that cause it seems like it'll be even better than those above.

I've had an Apple watch 3 for about a year and a half, really enjoyed it. If you aren't a gadget person or like to track work outs, its probably not for you. There are obvious gripes about it but otherwise I really enjoy it (largest gripe is battery life).

I hate to agree, but yes. I've had a Fitbit & some other ones & currently have an Apple Watch 4. I like it...but it's not anywhere near a necessity. It's mostly handy in meetings when I get a message & don't want to whip out my phone on a board room table or something.

It is definitely a solution looking for a problem, as much as I don't want to admit it. I like it - it's techie, it's cool, it's neat - but I would be just as fine living without it.

The best feature is being able to be 100% hands free during your work out, can skip/navigate songs or podcasts from your wrist and being able to reply to texts from it.

The newer earbuds are allowing you to do that. Google's new buds coming out in a couple of months supposedly let you leave your phone like 50' away and still be able to navigate around.

Rather than a watch, I'd like a visual earbud/glass device to be revisited. Something discreet that puts a screenless interface in front of your eyes. Google Glass was 25% there...need to bring it the rest of the way.

I plan on getting Focals by North when I need replacement glasses:

It's like a more discreet version of Google Glasses. No privacy-invading camera. Only you can see the projector screen on the glasses. I'm going to try it out next time I'm in NYC to see how it looks IRL. It's controlled via voice & a wireless finger ring. Super neat!

Yep. Imagine these with LEDs that broadcast directly to your eye instead of using lenses.

The only "smart watch" I would consider at this point is a Suunto D5 dive computer. I have no use for something like an iWatch or Android smart watch. The D5 both looks nice and would also be useful when I did actual dives.

I don't see myself spending that kind of coin on one though since I don't dive enough and already have a dive computer that I use when diving.

I don't want a smartwatch because I don't want anyone to own my time. It's why I have all of my notifications turned off. I'm not getting pinged every 2m like a lab rat when I get an email, or a like on a FB post. I own my time, not Mark Zuckerberg.

I don't see the point especially because they have to be tied to a phone. Chances are you can do all those things on your phone anyway. I'm also of the same mindset that I hate getting notifications for every little thing and that's probably about the only thing they're really good for is if your phone is in your pocket you can glance at your watch when you get a notification.

I suppose some functions could be handy like heart rate monitoring and such but if you specifically want fitness stuff a Fitbit is probably better.

I loathe these things - people now feel its OK to tap tap there damn wrist screens in meetings where having your phone out would be considered rude.

Disconnect people.

No desire to start wearing a watch again no matter how smart it is, and even if I needed one to tell time at a glance for some reason, it would be small, inexpensive, like a few I have in a drawer that I couldn't justify buying new batteries for.

Hell, my Citizen world time watch is smarter than me..why would I want a watch that advertises itself as smart?

I couldn't stand glasses any larger/thicker/heavier than they'd need to be for eyesight purposes, and would wonder if eyesight damage was a long term consequence.

A hat, "maybe" given a need, if proven safe for eyesight, but not glasses.

Alex Becker says it perfectly. You are getting huge dopemine spikes from your notifications, and it soon becomes an issue. These things are very addicting.
PS, he does curse every now and then. Not work safe.
