Alright, big cars may be safer. Once everyone owns a huge car, then the large cars will be too small to be safe. Then once everyone owns a truck, the huge cars will be too small to be safe. APC's for everyone?

The secret is to never get complacent and to always know where all the cars around you are and what they are doing. That is why constant scanning of your mirrors and surroundings is extremely important. Too bad this type of driving has been replaced with more importance being put on that cell phone call and relying on a wing and a prayer to see you through.

If I hit one with my Crown Vic while doing anything over 30 mph, no one in that car will survive.

A lot also depends on where you drive ... on a jammed highway with other vehicles 4 to 10 feet on every side of you cruising along at 60+ mph, all it takes is one person screwing up & theres not much even the best driver can do to avoid getting sucked in... thats where having a safer car helps.

This is all very true, but there are just some situations over which you have no control. If you're at a red light behind another vehicle, and promptly get plowed into by someone who, for whatever reason, didn't notice everyone stopped in front of him, you're pretty much screwed.

Which is why of all places, I'm absolutely the MOST terrified of highway off-ramps when I'm on my motorcycle. Especially at night.

Same could be said of someone ramming into you as you're passing through an intersection with a green light.

Been there, done that with the red light situation. Stopped at a red light, a few seconds later as I leaned forward to adjust my radio volume, I got plowed into by an unattentive driver from the rear. Never saw the two lines of cars that were stopped for the dual red lights shining above us. Fortunately, I was far enough back from the driver in front of me that I didn't impact him and my brakes were in good shape.

I had a 1990 Chevy Blazer at the time, about a year old. He hit me with a way old Chevy LUV and peeled his hood and fenders back halfway to his windshield. My Class 3 hitch took a major part of the impact. Did over $3K damage to my truck, fixed by his ins. co. His truck, a commercially-owned truck used by a landscapign business, was pretty much wasted.

While the best defense is scanning and planning your escape routes constantly, it cannot make up for some situations where gross stupidity and such reign.

That sounds overconfident

While avoiding the issue of an accident altogether is great and commendable, not having a backup plan of some sort can be foolish. That's like trying to start a business and pouring in tons of effort and planning into making sure it can work without ever thinking about an exit plan to recoup any of the damages if possible.

I think for most people, you can't expect that, and so higher standards of car safety are necessary. While we may not want to agree, that's life.
