I don't have ANY airbags in most of my cars and most also don't have collapsible steering columns but I don't feel unsafe at all. The driver is the biggest safety item in a car.

Want to make a bet? I pay very close attention to driving. I avoid accidents on almost a daily basis. The secret is to never get complacent and to always know where all the cars around you are and what they are doing. That is why constant scanning of your mirrors and surroundings is extremely important. Too bad this type of driving has been replaced with more importance being put on that cell phone call and relying on a wing and a prayer to see you through.

This is all very true, but there are just some situations over which you have no control. If you're at a red light behind another vehicle, and promptly get plowed into by someone who, for whatever reason, didn't notice everyone stopped in front of him, you're pretty much screwed.
Which is why of all places, I'm absolutely the MOST terrified of highway off-ramps when I'm on my motorcycle. Especially at night.
Same could be said of someone ramming into you as you're passing through an intersection with a green light.

Honda Motor Co.'s Fit subcompact was rated "good" in the 40-mpg front and 31-mph side crashes, but inadequate seats and head restraints earned it a "poor," the institute's worst score, in protecting occupants from injury in a 20-mph rear-end collision.
