Keep in mind that these are individual frames out of many which may last for less than a second. We'd have to see it in motion to really know. Anyways most of them look good and we don't know what actions were taken to get the effects i.e looking at a bright object for too long, sweeping the mouse really really fast. Any complaints can be blamed on an overzealous person trying to hard to impress with SM 3.0

I spend $230 for a pair of MauiJim shades so as not to see this stuff in regular life. Now I have to wear them to play a game.?. I hope there is a slider bar to tone it down. Makes me feel like 'riddick' w/ those goggles.

It also looks like someone shooting video with way too much SoftFX filter on - blur. It gets rid of wrinkles and blemishes for that soft, feminine look. Hey, maybe they are getting ready to come out with a Wedding 'FPS' and just using FC to test it on :D

The NV40 just does it faster

How do you know?

That you can do HDR in SM2.0, or that you can do it faster on an NV40?

HDR lighting (unless they're doing something unusual) should not require any SM3.0 features. They may use them to make it faster, but they should not be required -- you can download several HDR lighting demos that will run on PS2.0 hardware.

NV40 may well be faster, especially if SM3.0 is involved -- but if this is an SM2.0-only effect, it may actually be slower than the equivalent R420 product, since ATI seems to have better SM2.0 performance. We really won't know until there's something more tangible than some screenshots.

How do you know?

NV40 has a floating point framebuffer and supports fp blending and filtering. This allows it to do HDR more efficiently.
Also HRD is a SM2 feature if i remember correctly. but ATI cards can do it...it just the nv40 does it faster.

Hmmmm...the 6800GT is looking more and more tempting. I usually buy ATi, but this round nVidia seems to be inticing me more and more. I'll have to wait until the prices stabilize before I can make a firm decision.

Those screenshots hurt my eyes. I don't want my game looking like that :X

How can you guys complain so much about those graphics? They are vastly enhanced! Look at some of the lighting effects!

Sure, they are overexposed a bit at times, but I'm sure that will be resolved. You should be focussing on the added visual quality brought on by PS3.0 instead of complaining about the overexposure making your eyes hurt.

What PS3.0 stuff are you seeing? All I see is HDR.

that's a deceptive statement.

r420's will render HDR faster using the shader method, nv40 faster when using fp16 blending (r420 can't do fp16(floats) filtering and blending.

HL2 uses the A16R16G16B16 buffers (not float buffers) for HDR lighting, which runs faster on r420.

I don't know what it is, but my 9800XT gets the same type of glare, shine, whatever you want to call it. You can turn this down in the game properties.
