you may need to find an older version of the intel inf chipset drivers. If you could post the part number of the laptop we can look a bit more

Compaq R9000[R3000] was all I could find. I'll look again.

I know a Google search for that model brings up an AMD version, but this is an old Pentium 4.

I suspect it's something like an 845 chipset but could you run HWiNFO32 and click on the motherboard branch to see?

provided that it has worn out, usually on the bottom on the same sticker you should see something like PN:XXXXX#ABA

or maybe on the screen it should say R9350 for example

I don't really see a "branch" in HWiNFO32. Just a page with lots of information. It says the motherboard is "Hewlett-Packard 089C"

Then it says the chipset is: "Radeon 9100 IGP (RS300M) + SB200C"

I guess that means the SM Bus driver would have to come from ATI.

I think I got it now. Still installing (this system is S-L-O-W). The strange thing is, I went through great lengths to ensure I had the latest ATI package before and it somehow didn't get this driver.
