Get a PS2 for when you want to play the games. There's enough PS3 games to make me not care that mine doesn't have BC.

Seriously? BOTH sets of component inputs on my TV are used already, and that's without a PS2 in the house. Are you implying that I need a new TV (Seeing as I just bought mine a month ago)?

holy shit, this is an amazing announcement and push for sony.

way to go sony!

and BC is SSSSSSOOOOOO overrated.

Not really. I have a 1st gen (20gb upgraded to 320) and I love the BC aspect. I never had a PS2, so being able to get a lot of great games for cheap was a big draw for me - and one of the deciding factors that pushed me to PS3 over 360.

I know this is completely a matter of personal taste, but the PS3 Slim is hideous looking to me. No more glossy black, and some really tacky buttons for power and eject.

Both are evolving into full-fledged gaming portals where you can shop, talk to friends, and do more than just play games.

That is fine for those that want to do it they could. One of the big reasons I found PSN to be vastly superior to the travesty that is Live! is that all that useless BS wasn't pushed in my face constantly.

If you feel this is "nagging" you or "pushing a bunch of crap" in your face, then too bad. It's the direction the industry is going.

The PS3 as of right now and the Wii do not do this, 1/3 of all 360 owners are Gold Live! members. A small segment of the industry is headed in that direction, the overwhelming majority of the industry isn't.

Just have the console automatically play whatever you have in the tray on power up.

That isn't supposed to be an option in 3.0, that is my point. If that is not changed, my PS3's get the network plug pulled(pulled the 360s plugs a while ago too).

I think I'm going to get another PS3 now. It's annoying having to share the PS3 for games and for BR movies. My son is on it for games, and my wife wants to watch her movie. My problem is solved now! Woot!

I don't think Sony will ever put BC back. I do think it's so they can remake PS2 games and sell them on PSN. It's a money maker for them. Plus Sony wants you to play PS3 games, so more PS3 games get sold, so they can make more money off the licensing. You have to admit there's a lot of PS2 games out there that is a lot more fun than the current gen games. They don't want Gamestop to make all that money from all those used PS2 games, LOL.

I'm about 80% on picking up a PSPgo. Not so much for games, but for 80% media and 20% gaming. I could pickup an iPod/iTouch, but for what the Go can offer, it's going to suit me better. Only annoyance is the non-transferability of the digital format for gaming.

Saving an input, dispensing with memory cards, gaining access to the Dual Shock 3, and getting very good upscaling are all reasons to want a PS3 with BC rather than a PS2. I'm tired of a bunch of people telling us how a PS2 is somehow the better solution - by and large, it is not.

If you want BC, go buy a used PS3 60gb. They're out there. Makes me glad I shelled out for one when I did.

PS3 upscaling does not look as good as standard PS2 with component inputs.

By default the game boots to the 'What's new' section where it can push crap you don't care about, then they felt the need to link PSN again in the game section, they push selling avatars(!) along with charging for the new themes. Then they add the info pane at the top to nag you about people on line and messages. Background animations don't bother me, it isn't like we haven't always had them(they just added to how animated they could be), them pushing a bunch of crap I don't like. If I want to feel like I'm playing a 360, well, I'd just play the 360.

Where do you see/read that it boots to the "What's New" section by default? Also, the gripe about the info pane is pretty damn weak. That's a feature that many people have been requesting. Most people wanted a quick way to see how many friends are online and if they have any messages without scrolling to the friends list. Plus, it's damn small!

I always thought the move to a "slim" product was genius.

The company is happy with lower manufacturing costs, less obsolescent parts, and greater rate of production, and the consumer loves things that are smaller for whatever reason.

The leak took away a bit of this announcement's glory, but it's still pretty significant. $300 is a solid price tag and competes with (and in most cases, outperforms) a $300 360 Elite, let alone the current $300 Pro. I wonder how Microsoft will retaliate and attempt to add value to their product.

He explicitly states it in the video, and also states that you need to go there to continue a game you were playing previously.

Also, the gripe about the info pane is pretty damn weak.

Have an option to toggle it. They could add in an exact replica of the Live! system and I wouldn't care if I wasn't forced to use it. Being forced to deal with all that crap is why I detest Live!. I bought a console to play games, not as a terminal for a company to pimp their crap to me 🙂

Yes, I'm wondering too. Maybe they're working on an Xbox 360 SLIM? Hahaha!

Ahh... my comp and work doesn't have audio so I couldn't hear him say that. About the info pane... I've got nothing against the friend and message indicators, that should be there and is a highly requested feature. But I will say that I can do without the scrolling information. Hopefully that is replacing the RSS feed and can be turned off like the current RSS.

So what's going to be broken with this update?

PS3 Media Server by chance?

Seems like every update breaks something...

From my own experience, you are dead wrong. Were you the guy who started the "FF12 looks horrible on my HDTV" thread?

No, that was me. I have an 80 GB MGS4 Bundle PS3 hooked up via HDMI to my 1080p TV. I can only imagine how horrible that would look hooked up via component cables!

I know that it wouldn't be full screen if it was a PS2, as I had to tell my PS3 Upscaler to go Full Screen in order to get the game to scale correctly. I mean, sure, I guess I could set my TV to stretch the image but boy, that would look terrible!

no, wasn't that ryanshaffer?

the majority of my upscaled PS2 games look way better than any PS2 component output

hans, are you taking meds now? 😀

Oh, one other tidbit: the new PS3s supposedly have the "Other OS" functionality removed. VERY interesting.

Wouldn't that be a Firmware change and not a hardware change?

But you're right.

The release states that "The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system."

Joystiq has a gallery of PS3 Slim images.

After looking at those pictures... I don't get the point of a PS3 slim. The slim isn't that much smaller (at least not the magnitude of the PS2->PS2 slim). Sure the PS3 phat is large and heavy, but the PS3 slim is only slightly less large and heavy. Besides, who cares? The console stays put in one place, and if I do move it around, a pound difference means jack.

It's probably cheaper to manufacture, but beyond that, I don't see any real benefit.

That's the primary and only reason right there. If you already own a PS3, there's no reason to replace it with a Slim. Especially if you have one with BC. There's just no tangible benefit.
