SLI 7800GTX too much for a 19in LCD?

1 7800 should cut it for now, and if your not sastified, you could always buy another later. Unless your going to be running at 16x AA though, I doubt you'll need a second.

get one now, honestly i would take the money from the 2nd one and sell your 19inch and get a bigger lcd monitor

I say get one 7800 GTX and get a 21" LCD in place of the second one. The 7800 GTX will definitely be able to drive the 21"'s 1600x1200 resolution. (That is if 21" LCDs come cheap nowadays. I have no idea, but 19" ones are bargain-basement.)

The 20.1" Dell 2001FP and 2005FPW models can be had for less than $500 if you catch the right coupons. The 2005FPW is a really nice companion for a 7800 GTX.

Since 19in LCDs generally support a native resolution of 1280x1024, a single 7800GTX will be more than enough IMO.

It might actually be overkill for a 19" at the moment. However, you will be able to run everything at the absolute max settings, and you will have a video card that should last you quite a while. It really depends on what you want to spend, you might also consider a 7800GT.

Complete overkill. Money should be spent on better monitor. Old rule was half of the total system cost on monitor.

Overkill. A single 7800GTX will handle 1280x1024 with no problems in all games at high settings. Even if it doesn't, like anyone can tell the difference between 16X AA and 8X AA in gameplay 😛.

You'll be getting at least 50+ FPS in all games. For example, in BF2 a single 7800GTX can do 1600x1200 4X AA at 50+ FPS, so clearly at 1280x1024 the performance will be even better. Same with Doom3. With HL2 a single 7800GTX gets 120 FPS at 1600x1200 4XAA, so you have nothing to worry about there either. Benchmarks.

not entirely true...you all forgot one thing...the gpu still depends on the CPU! If he has a crappy cpu, it won't matter how good his GPU is, running at 1280x1024 puts more strain on the cpu than on the gpu...So, IOW, the bottleneck in his system would be his CPU now.

From Anand's GTX review:
Many very good flat panels will only display up to 1280x1024 or 1600x1200. Owning one of these panels really negates the necessity for a 7800 GTX right now. From the numbers we have seen, the highest end card we would recommend for owners of a 1600x1200 flat panel . . . is the 7800GT.
Owners of 1280x1024 panels don't really need to spend the money here . . .

what's the res of your 19 incher? . . . 10x12 is a "waste" for even a 7800GT and yes, your CPU is a minor bottleneck

Even for a single GTX?

You cpu won't be too bad. it should drive a single 7800GTx fairly well but it will be the bottle-neck at 1280x1024. I'd say either save a little money and get a 7800GT (should do everything you want it to with that monitor) or spend a little extra for the GTX in hopes that titles coming out in the near future will better make use of the processing power. Than, buy a Dell 20.1" screen, you won't regret it.

A GTX isn't that bad of an overkill, you just crank up the AA/AF until you get more stressful games, although I agree that a 7800GT is a better match. Heck, go with a 6800GT or X800XL and put the savings in the bank for future upgrades.
