Yeah. And since then, Nintendo has treated Windwaker pretty poorly IMO. Heck, the cell-shaded graphics were positively mind-blowing when I first saw them.

Especially look at the 3DS. What game do they choose to remake on it? ocarina.

What?!? How does a company "treat a game poorly" after it has been released? Please explain. Did they lock it in the house with no food and water and kick it every time it barked?

Like Dumac already pointed out, it sold superbly, received nothing but praise from critics, and spawned basically two "spin offs" in the same style.

Also, as a side note, as someone who remembers eagerly awaiting the game when it was new and being part of the internet forum silliness, MOST of the backlash against WW was leveled long BEFORE its release, when Nintendo demoed it after previously showing demo footage of a darker, more realistic Link on the Gamecube. The internet, shockingly, overreacted and forums were flooded with hate.
But once the game was released, that all mostly vanished, and everyone seemed to come to the realization that the art style worked, and the game was fantastic.

played long enough to get the skyward sword. i'm fairly certain i'm in love with the game already. of course, i never had any doubts about it.

Anyone know what the hell Newegg's doing with its CE preorders? I ordered this thing in September and my order is "on hold". It brings to mind Seinfeld episode "The Alternate Side".

Can you play this by just lying down in bed? I really don't want to wave a controller at the screen...

(yeah, I am seriously asking this.)
This is an example of why games like this will never interest me seriously. Right now I have a bum shoulder, that means I wouldn't even be able to play it at all.

Ok, so I just borrowed the game from a friend, and the very, very first thing I'm noticing is that the game looks absolutely horrible. The jaggies are pretty unbearable. Do I have some setting on my Wii wrong? It looks like a PS2 game, and not even a good PS2 game.

Get over it... Art direction > HD graphics. This is the best looking game on the Wii to date IMO.

Not hating on you, but this is common with today's gamers. "OMG GRAFIXXXX!!! HD3DAAAFGOTTAHAVE!"

You're entitled to your opinion, but sometimes the way a game looks art wise and the way a story is crafted and the way a game plays are more important than photo realism.

What? I was asking a question... I wasn't trolling or anything. I genuinely felt like I had done something wrong... Upon more internet searching it sounds like this is just the way it is, though.

No, no...it's not you personally. Just please understand that the #1 thing people use to push this game down or at least try to, is compare it to a game like Uncharted 3 in graphics. I guess I'm a bit sensitive to it since I see it so much on other forums and I'm tired of trying to explain art direction and all that. It's worn me out when talking about it, last thing I wanna hear about Zelda is "it looks bad" lol. Meant nothing by it at all.

I don't think the art direction in SS is particularly impressive. It's not just the technical side that's lacking. Seems uninspired and bland to me.

well, it sort of is a compromise between wind waker and ocarina of time.

because people bitched so much about wind waker being "kiddie"

Yeah, the art style does seem bland.

It's a mix between windwaker and ocarina IMO.

but yeah, in screen shots, heck at times it looks like a PS2 game. because they refuse to go full cell-shaded and be accused of being too kiddie.

Glad I'm not the only person that was turned off by the graphics. Its not really bad and at times looks pretty good actually, its just not appealing though.

To me, they took Twilight Princess and added a bit of Wind Waker to it. I would have greatly preferred them to do the opposite, take Wind Waker and add a bit of Twilight Princess to it.

Wind Waker has aged really well. I was definitely one of the people that hated it when I first saw it, but after playing it, I actually started to like the graphics a lot. Go to the Dolphin forums and look at some of the screenshots of it being emulated, I think it looks better than a lot of current games, and a lot more appealing than Skyward Sword.

Yeah, I view Windwaker as the pinnacle of Nintendo's creativity, and their subsequent backtracking into nostalgic appeals (just look at the 3DS library) as the sad future of the company.

I finished the game already and during the cutscenes, I kept thinking of how much better it would look if it was on my Xbox 360.

I just picked up the Wii component cables last night and got them hooked up and I'm kind of thinking the game looks better on composite. Anyone else try this?

So far I really like the game though.

Yeah. I'm going to wait on this one, hoping for a Wii U port. Nintendo has lost the magic that used to make me feel like everything they did was incredible.

I hear that the parts that are good, are great. But on the flip side, I hear tons of complaining about the filler. And if there's any one thing I despise, it's pointless filler fetch quests. I don't think a wii u port would change that, but at least the filler would look nicer, and I can probably stomach that.

Really looking forward to diggen in with this one. The graphics are not detailed, but i've always liked the role the graphics in the Zelda series.

I play games for experience, graphics are a big part of that for me, but honestly I still really appreciate the game world design and graphics of what i've seen during my first 2 hours in on Skyward Sword despite the lack of fidelity in the graphics.

Should be a fun one.

Kinda sad that Wind Waker looks way better than this.

I was crawling through a hole and it looked like I was playing Quake II or something.

Spoilers for those who have not completed the first 3 areas:
The harp thing is also pretty lame. The melodies are lame, waving the controller around to play them is really lame. Its like some super half-assed ocarina from OOT.

I don't really like the art style either. It is bland.

But I like everything else. And I can upgrade my shield holy carp!

I haven't tried composite cables, maybe the component cables are making everything look worse. Everything is super jaggy on my LCD, holy shit. I would use my tube TV I have stored away in the garage, but its too damn bulky and then I wouldn't get widescreen so everything would be smaller. 🙁

I'm in the camp that wishes the jaggies weren't there, but I'm not a GFX whore. What does bother me are the colors in the game... I like the art styling of the main characters and some of the friendlies, but I wish the enemies had a darker feel to them...

Then again, I'm still very early in the game (just finished the first dungeon) so maybe this will change later?

Spin-offs on the Nintendo DS, sure. But not a full-sized sequel for the next gen console. I think the gamecube era probably was Nintendo at its most innovative. In addition to wind waker they were also creating new franchises like Pikmin which I found very charming, or games like Luigi's mansion.

Though I was impressed by the wii balance board.

What does that mean, a "full sized sequel"? You do realize the only "sequel" in the Zelda timeline, arguably, is Zelda II directly following Zelda 1, correct? The Zelda timeline is largely nonsense, and can be interpreted any which way, but Zelda games as a rule are never sequels to each other; they all exist in their own self-contained universe.

If by sequel you mean just another spin-off using the same art style, again, the DS had those, and that's where the majority of Zelda games seem to go.

I also wouldn't agree that the Gamecube was Nintendo's best time for innovation. That clearly belongs to either the SNES or NES, but I'd cast my vote for the SNES. Gamecube wouldn't even be in the Top 3. Wind Waker was great, sure, but Luigi's Mansion was largely a disappointment, and the GC also gave us the worst full Mario game in awhile, Super Mario Sunshine.
