Oblivion is quickly becoming the Madden of the fantasy world. There's a new one every year and it's the same old shit.

And you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Per the usual, as consistent as having a new Madden each year.
 
Is anyone else a bit disappointed by the graphics? Sure, the models, textures, and lighting look better, but the video I watched of Skyrim still had a short draw distance (grass only went out about 20 feet, landscape was rather bland looking at any reasonable distance after the edge of the grass). Granted, this was the 360 version. I'm hoping the PC version allows these "issues" to be fixed without a bunch of under-the-hood tweaking.

You nailed it right there. The PC version will look a lot better, I guarantee it. The xbox360 is definitely not capable of the draw distances, just look at oblivion.
 
What I couldn't get over in Oblivion was how the enemies (and items found) scaled to your level no matter where you went. It made every fight exceptionally boring to me, and much of the exploration. You always knew what you were going to run into, and every battle was just "challenging" enough to be annoying rather than be an actual challenge or rewarding.

Not looking forward to more of that in Skyrim.

This. What people need to realize is when Oblivion launched ~5 years ago the 360 and PC were on much closer playing fields. The 360 now has the same horsepower it had 5 years ago. The PC has become miles ahead as far as horsepower. I bet a typical $1000 PC has 10x the graphics capabilities of a 360. I just hope we get to experience this in Skyrim!

The PC version of Oblivion didn't have much more in the way of draw distance compared to the 360 version. Grass still visibly cuts off early on, distance landscaping and buildings look meh, etc. You had to use mods or tinker with the ini file to really make it much better.

I'm hopeful that Skyrim for PC won't have the same limitations, but I am still a little worried as well.

Read what I posted (the post before yours). You have to understand that when Oblivion launched the PC and 360 were neck-in-neck in terms of performance. Now that it's been 5 years a comparably price PC, for what you would have got back 5 years ago, is ~10x faster in the graphics department. The PC version of Skyrim should look awesome. If not, I'm going to cry myself to sleep for 4 nights.

That's true, but if you look at 360 games from 5 years ago and compare them to recent ones, they are capable of doing much more with the same hardware. I'm not saying pc and xbox are still equal, but they're getting better at making games for the 360.
 
I loved Oblivion, even despite what I felt were its minor shortcomings. Nothing a couple mods didn't fix, anyway.

Greatly looking forward to Skyrim.
 
uh oh guys... epicly cataclysmic 2012 end of the world style bad news:

UGH. This probably doesn't bode well for a robust modding kit, which was the only saving race of the otherwise terrible Oblivion.

Bethesda: Consoles to be the lead platform for Skyrim, aim to make it “really accessible”

In an interview with CVG, Bethesda’s Craig Lafferty said that Skyrim has been developed with consoles as the lead target.

The lead producer on Skyrim said: “We use the consoles as our lead SKU… So we develop towards the consoles and then porting to PC is usually not too bad actually .”

The above comments are likely to cause PC gamers a bit of grief, and the next thing on Craig Lafferty’s mind was unlikely to appease them.

“We wanted to take it and make it really accessible,” the producer said.“… We still have the complexity behind the scenes, but we wanted to make it so that you could pick up the controller and play and it was easy; the average person could get into it…We knew we wanted to make the user interface a little bit more open and available … get away from the stats and things like that.”

Hopefully this doesn’t mean we will be getting a dumbed down version of the RPG, but rather a slicker and more streamlined game. Simplifying RPG’s usually equates to commercial success, but also causes a split in your core audience, as we saw with Dragon Age 2. Bethesda will have to make sure they don’t alienate its established fan base in its quest to please the “average person”.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim releases on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11.

Mods will take care of any graphical deficiencies, and you can bet there will be many by Bethesda. As with all Elder Scrolls games, in a year we'll all be laughing at the notion of playing Skyrim stock.

I'm willing to bet everything that the PC version will look exactly like the Xbox 360 Version. I doubt they took the time to change it very much, it should be a near perfect comparison. I personally feel that the graphics are lack luster, im not impressed at all by the textures or anything having to do with the visual aspects of the game. I'm rather disappointed in that field.

The minute I purchase a game and play through it, it should essentially look appealing especially if they boast about graphics before the game even releases. The notion that I have to play through the game, and wait for a modder to come out with graphical enhancements in hopes that I will replay the game again with the new mod is just weird. I just don't like when developers boast and brag about the graphics and how its something special and when time comes for us to play it, the truth reveals its self.
 
You have an excellent point, but that's why you buy it a year later for $20 and get a superior product. Such is the nature of Bethesda games.

While I agree with you to an extent, that doesn't apply to Elder Scrolls games. Mods are literally the only reason why I so greatly enjoy each installment. Otherwise it would be nothing more than a sandbox game with a crap story.

Besides, graphics are not the greatest concern.
 
I just really hope it's not more of the same with all their last "rpg's". Their voice acting always sucks, their dungeons all look the same and have the same layouts, leveling system is too low and easy to max out and when you're maxed out enemies are too easy to kill, and lame story that you really don't care about.

If you think appealing to the lowest common denominator is a good thing you need to get out of the house and see what America has become.

When investing tens of millions of dollars for development of a game, one should probably make sure it appeals to more than a handful of ubernerds and their desire for needless complexity.
 
Who said complexity is needless? A good game will have a depth of rules and strategies for those who want to explore them, like all us min/maxer types. At the same time it will present this info in a very simple and straight forward manner on the surface. Unfortunately games are just going for straight simplicity and it just makes them less interesting and limits options. Even if you are a mouth breathing console noob, by the time you hit a second play through you've probably figured out the game enough so that you can explore the more advanced options a game has to offer.

That said, Oblivion was a terrible example of this with it's awful leveling system that pegged stat gain to skill useage in such a bizarre and inconsistent way that you could really gimp your character.

Not to mention, at some point all this simplifying and hybridization is going to blow up in a spectacular way where games all become so similarly dull that they no longer possess any of the qualities that made them unique and fun in the first place. If you work to hard to please everybody you'll eventually end up pleasing no one.

Oh, you're a "hardcore PC gamer" so I suppose you want a real combat sim. Trudging through swamps where you have to push different keys to move each limb separately. Minigames to wring out your socks. Looking for the enemy for several days in real time, and then getting a bullet through your head before you fire a shot. That'd be a real man's game. You're not a console kiddie are you?

I'm just glad they aren't using the "zoom in to talk to a character" mode that Oblivion had - man that was annoying.
Hopefully it'll be a bit more gory - the head chop to the wolf should've literally chopped it's head off. 🙂
