The main quest in Oblivion is easy and short. I was told to complete it first before all the leveling kicked in and I did (finish it). Half way through Shivering Isles the game crapped out on my and the characters weren't doing what they were supposed to (so I couln't finish quests). I also had a character crap out on me (at Weyans Priory) in a first install.

Finished Morrowind on the 360 soon after release, then Oblivion, then Fallout 3. Bethesda is one developer I feel comfortable spending $50-60 with.

I finished Daggerfall and Morrowind. Never could get far in Oblivion, it never grabbed me like the other two for some reason. Might have to give it a try again.

Arena - Played it and finish it several times. I loved this game when it came out.
Daggerfall - Should be called Buggerfall. This was a piece of crap never worked right even with patches.
Redguard - never played
Morrowind - Never played.
Oblivion. - Finished the game.

Anything is an improvement over Oblivion, but I still don't like how zones level when you enter them in Fallout. It's a slightly better way of hand holding when compared to Oblivion, but I'd still prefer a method with next to no hand holding. In other words, I want something unrelated to both games.

Wait, you're telling me you've never played any of their games on the PC with mods?!

That's the only reason why I buy their games...

I played and beat Morrowind. I dislike the leveling system overall, but at least the mobs didn't level with you in the same way they did in Oblivion. What made Morrowind so special to me was the story and soundtrack which was epic. I never got tired of the theme song.

In general I love Elder Scrolls games, but IMO Bethesda really needs to rethink the leveling/drop system. I like that they are trying to be different, but I despised the Oblivion system which meant you could beat the game at level 1 yet nothing good started dropping off mobs until you were at higher levels. Also, you would only get stats bumps for primary skills..etc, it was a clusterfu** because if you wanted to maximize Int for example (as a caster), you had to be careful to only use those particular skills and avoid others so that it doesn't affect the modifiers.

Oblivion would have been better served dropping leveling altogether and just leave individual skill leveling in, and make gear/items more skill dependent. Primary stats can be derived from higher level items just like some other games.

Yeah would be cool. I like brutal games where you're dropped in there and you have to survive. Oblivion sure wasn't like that and I doubt Skyrim will be too, but let's hope.

BTW, by leveling I meant character leveling. From what I understand we'll earn XP to level up and when we'll do, we'll spend points in the skills we want. Still no classes but like in Fallout 3/NV, you choose what you want to do while leveling.

Good thing IMO.

I just hope they populate the wilderness with creatures that aren't all out to get you, no matter how small they may be. Enough with the rabid rats and crabs, give me some deer and other critters that I can hunt if need be and that are fearful of me if I get close. And birds!

Good point...but my thrust with Bethesda is falling since Oblivion...

I just watched LOTR for first time and really noticed how many things from those movies
looked like things in Oblivion.

You... need to go and replay the games with mods! :colbert:

Seriously people! Bethesda games are just terrible without mods, you really are missing a lot.

That's a matter of opinion. Most of these mods are cosmetic or add new areas or some such. I don't care about any of that and don't want to hassle with dozens of mods. If the game is terrible without them, I simply play something else...

The most popular mods completely overhaul the leveling/fighting/gameplay mecahnics, which isn't something small.

Also, new areas/quests/etc is free content. It is like DLC you don't have to pay for, and often higher quality than the actual DLC.

Plus graphical mods aren't that useless. The recent compilation of mods for Morrowind make it look as good as oblivion, if not better in some ways.

I found vanilla Oblivion to be unbearable. I couldn't play for more than a week. Later, with mods, it is passable, but still not that great. Mods can't fix everything!

Except maybe a total conversion mod. I need to try nehrim sometime.

Fair enough, though it's still a hassle for me looking for the good mods with my limited time for playing and see what exactly do they bring to the table. And I don't want to restart the game from beginning.

As for free DLC, I bought GOTY edition of Oblivion with 2 extensions, and never got to play either of them, didn't even finish the main game really. I played more of the Morrowind, but still, I have enough regular content to play before I would need additional.

I would play Morrowind with new graphics if I haven't played the game twice already. Maybe in a couple years...

Sorry, I meant Morrowind on the Xbox, but no I have not gotten into the PC versions. Usually, with any game, if I beat the game on one platform I won't play it on another later. I may get Skyrim on the PC, though, will have to wait and see. I might have to get it on PC & PS3 so my girlfriend and i can both play it at the same time...lol

Any word on whether this version will support co-op or be an MMO?

Ehhh I'd rather level via skilling than gaining some experience when killing stuff

Me too. In fact, I don't even see the need for levels at all. If they took away the ability to level in Oblivion, and just let you gain skills the same way it would be a great improvement.
