Skoorb Rant #57: Does it annoy you that sometimes technology is used when really it shouldn't be?

StageLeft

No Lifer
It annoys me (what doesn't haha).

Example 1: Anyway like with that gas station - shell (?) - you can get these cards that are attached to your credit/debit card and use them for quicker purchases. Oh wow! Great. So I can go and buy gas with this thing and instead of waiting the 5 seconds for my credit card to get authorized I can just swipe this thing instead. What's the point? I bet that to make up that 5 seconds it will take many times, since filling out the application forms must take at least 3 minutes. That's like 36 trips. Get gas twice a week? 18 weeks even to break even on time. Then there is the fact that you need to ONLY go to shell stations. Searching for one specifically, unless one is one you'd normally use, will cost way more than 5 seconds each stop!

Example 2: Places like bestbuy have a way to buy online and pick up at the store! Cool! But why is this cool? It's not and here's why: Find the item online, pay for it, then go to bestbuy to pick it up VS. go to bestbuy and pick it up and pay there. In both cases you still need to produce a credit card for somebody to see, still have to get out of your car, etc.. You even need to, for bestbuy, go to a special "order pickup area". How many man hours and dollars did bestbuy dump into this utterly useless idea?

Example 3: The new discover card that is slim and you can fold it into its case. What's the point? There isn't one. Gonna carry it instead of a wallet? No, because who wants to use their credit card without carrying around their wallet (id is often asked for). So what does this accomplish? All it accomplishes is fattening up your pocket. Of course I'm sure discover has suckered some people in to this who think that the new switch blade card is going to make their life much better than the standard wallet card. Wtf?!

yes, we should get rid of all pointless techs, like video cards, because all they do is contribute to the overall degeneration of society.
😉😛

Nah...Everytime I walk into a bathroom with automatic flushing toilets and automatic faucets, I feel like I'm in Futureworld...

Seriously, am I the only one who think these things came out of a 50's future show? I think it's the coolest thing in the world.

😀

Nope, I just don't use it and let other people worry about themselves. 😛😉

I am considering getting an Exxon/Mobil Speedpass. It could come in handy if you ever forget/lose your wallet.

1.) Gas Cards are used by companies for company cars
2.) That Best Buy pick up thing is awesome, I like to know if they have what I want in stock because I live over 15 miles from the store
3.) The case idea is understandable, it will probably prevent people from loosing the card if they have trouble keeping track of them, and if their wallet gets stolen they still have a CC.

Your far to picky Skroob

Like most things involving the use of technology, I don't personally have a problem with new innovations per se.
What torques me is the BLIND EXPECTATION that technology is a MAGIC BULLET, thereby removing the need for humans to actually think and ponder and plan and dream.

Especially when it comes to improving education in this country :|

Its all about convenience all 3 cases but in particular example maybe you havent noticed some ppl have keychains? Not just people who randomly have keychains but it has been a fashion statement too. So putting it on a keychain might be easier than having it in their wallet and it might be "hipper" to lure younger generations to use their services. Also if they have a ton of cards (hint hint the American way of spending and not saving) its one less card to carry. It fits the American persona.

OMFG, I bought something at Best Buy with that online thing and it was such a waste of time. When you go to the store you have to wait in the customer service line to pick it up, you know, where all the returns and complaints go...

I would have been out of there in a tenth of the time if I just found the product myself and went to a register. :|

Or cooking, driving, sex.......

Technology is a beautiful thing, but it breeds a lack of skill at doing whatever the activity is that the technology is making easier. Maybe that's one of the reasons that old people are always so crotchety about it.

I love those things!!!
if their wallet gets stolen they still have a CC.
But what if you misplace your keys?! That's something people do far more often I'd wager.

If you don't have your keys, odds are you won't be getting any gas since you can't drive to the gas station.

One thing I've noticed about all the guys I live with (in college), is that most of them don't carry a wallet. They carry a keychain with a little 'billfold' in it that can hold their ID and may be one other card. One of my friends has the Discover thing, and I can see how it would be useful for him, or the others who don't carry wallets.

By the way, though, I think these things are kind of goofy, too, and I would probably never carry one.

Why bother with email when we still using traditional snail mail & courier?
Why not just get rid of the computer in every office and get back to a pad of paper & pencil since computer is nothing but trouble & we still are using just as much or more paper than the past?
Why get a wide screen TV when you can get much wider picture at an out door drive-in?
Why do we bother to get a sport car to drive to & from work when traffics is horrible that a horse & cart goes just as fast & isn?t as bad a pollutant to the environment?
Why do we bother to invent pants, when you have to unzipped to do your thing?
Life was a lot simpler when we goes bare bottom...

Why, why, why..............?

wow, all that coming from a "lowtech" guy too.

Or a corollary to the Best Buy thing - they have a computer inside the store where you can place an order for it online and select to pick it up. Diehard BB fans will bust a nut over that one.

And, my nickname was McGuyver.

This is not always the case, but right now anything on BestBuy.com gets interest free financing through January 2004. I was in the market to buy a TV. The best the store was doing was 90 days interest free. I ordered online and picked it up at the store, so now I have 12 months versus 3 months of using Best Buy's money. I always do interest free financing if its available that way I hold onto my money as long as possible.

I loose my keys weekly. i think I have lost my wallet 2 times in my life. Waiting 200 years at the DMV for a lisence is bad enough. Calling the CC and banks to get your numbers changed is another.
