Its been something that ive always wanted (im sure that goes for every male out there) but never quite accomplished.. im 5' 10" about 150 a good portion of that comming from my gut (beer) Most of my friends are going to the gym.. Id get a pass but they live about 10 miles away from me.. and another 5miles to the gym... So the gym is out of the question, there are some other reasons too but I just cant go.

So basically what Ive been trying to do is work out at home. I use 2 15lb dumbells, jump rope, pushups, and pull up bar. Im so on and off and inconsistant with my work out. I guess im not confident enough.. I think to myself and ask is this really helping?.. Id rather have someone give me a regimen that I can follow.. which would include healthy eating habits.. detailed routines on what I can do exactly to get ripped... honestly I just need something to follow and I think I would work diligently towards my goal... For those of you reading, if you have been in a similar situation and have gotten to where you wanted to please give us your 2 cents..

6'4" 220

If you want to get "Ripped" you need to go to the gym. Until then get some heavier weights and do it religiously don;t start then stop then start again.

welll i could teach ya how to gain weight...but then i would have to teach ya to lose some of it.....i am still working on figuring that part out 🙂

Heres a pic!

Oh and how on earth do i make my hair grow back? 🙂

haha, im not that bad. I've got a friend thats skinnier. I think he's the same weight as me, but 6'3" :Q

a couple years ago i was pretty sick for a while, and lots some weight.. ended up weighing only 120lbs (looked half dead though, and I probably was.😛)

I suppose I could use a little more strength ( at least upper-body).

My gf told me about an Indian guy at her work who is 5'11 and weighs 107 lbs. I was jealous till I heard his weight 🙁

Hey Kendogg 🙂

I am a over weight old man, don't feel bad, we are Americans !. We are supposed to be fat, bald and lazy 😉 🙂

You can still get a great workout from home, the biggest problem is self-discipline. I'm actually stronger now than when I used to go the gym. But I'll occasionally go through periods of a couple weeks where I feel I'm just too busy to go downstairs and workout with all my equipment. Going to the gym seems inconvenient, but if you can manage to go with a friend or two you'll do a better job of sticking with it since you'll help keep each other in the routine.

You can get in a pretty good workout at home with a small investment. ~$150 for a bench that folds flat, does incline, and decline. Another $200 in dumbells ranging from 10 pounds up to about 60 pounds.

I work out almost entirely with dumbells.

Workout goes something like this -

Monday: Tricep/legs
- over the head tricep curl
- bent over tricep flys
- bench dips
- dumbell squats
- dumbell lunges

Wednesday: Chest/biceps/forarms
- bench press
- incline bench press
- decline bench press
- hammer curls
- concentration curls
- butterfly curls
- incline dumbell curls
- forarm curls

Friday: Back/Shoulders
- forward dumbell raises
- side dumbell raises
- shoulder shrugs
- bent over rows
- upright rows
- military press

Throw in some ab work and 30 minutes of cardio and you are good to go. You can do all of those with a bench and dumbells. No need for cumbersome bars or machines. If you do it right, and consitently, you can certainly bulk up quite nicely.

Pick up Arnold Schwartzenegger's Encyclopedia and his autobiography. The encyclopedia will give you more than enough details for gaining weight and the autobio will give you some motivation and also some more background on working out. Use both as reference, but for gaining weight, you have to eat more, sleep more and work out more and make all three a habit, not just some hobby. Once the habit is formed you will gain what you seek and it will be easier than you imagine.

I'm 6'0" and was 200 lbs, now I'm 185.

I've lost almost all of my visible fat, and gained quite a bit of muscle. I dropped two inches in my waist, and gained six in my chest. (I haven't measured anything else) I've more than doubled strength so far.

Here's what I did/do:

Cardio:
Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat
Run 3 1/2 miles early morning

Don't let this scare you. It's easy to work up to if you follow this: link

Tue and Thu
Walk 3 1/2 miles early morning

Sun
Off

You will HAVE to do 45 minutes of cardio at least three times a week if you want to lose that gut and spare tire. Simply lifting weights will not get rid of it.

The weight training is five days a week, and alternates week to week. What I did Mon, Wed and Fri one week is done Tue and Thu the next and vice versa.

Weights:
Five day week. "Push/pull"

Day 1
Push
Chest, anterior shoulders, triceps, squats, quads, back of forearms

Day 2
Pull
Back (both upper and lower, Lats, posterior and lateral shoulders, biceps, hamstrings, calves, front of forearms.

Repeat

Weekends off.

For every major muscle group I do four or five exercises, three sets each. For the arms and legs, three exercises, three sets each.

I start with as much weight as I can and squeeze out eight reps per set. I work up to ten or twelve, and increase the weight until I can only do eight again and start over again.

When you start, the gains will come fast up until you've increased your strength by about 50%. After that, the gains come slower, but steady if you change around your sets enough.

You will need to join a gym, or at least get some quality weight equipment ($1000 at least). You aren't going to build a balanced body with only dumbells. Have you looked at your local YMCA?

You aren't going to build a balenced body with only dumbells

Heh. Funny you should mention balance. That's one of the key things about dumbels - you have to work to balance them. You don't have a machine or a straight bar doing it for you.

What I meant, is you cannot do everything you need to do with dumbells alone.

Other than some lat pull downs, a pec deck, leg press, and leg extension machine, there really isn't a whole lot that you *can't do* with dumbells for what I would consider "basic" weight training. You just have to be creative.

If you wanted to do power lifting like arnold or something then yeh, it'd be tough to do power cleans or dead lifts with dumbells, but most people don't need to do power lifting. The workouts that I listed are more geared tword toning, strength building, and overall fitness instead of all show and power.

You also have to think about it in the grand scheme of things - is an 85% workout better than no workout?

So basically you're too lazy? Second paragraph in your first post said the same.

Go to a gym and get a membership, or at the very least pick up a decent book on bodybuilding which will have diet in it as well as weight programs to follow but let's be honest here - with 15lb barbells and a jump rope you don't really have what you need. So go to a gym!

Yeah enough to muscle and bulk up though. You should also give each muscle group at least 48 hours of rest, preferably 72 hours. I would follow Amused's Push Pull method . I would do Biceps, Forearms and Back in one session, Chest, Tri's and Shoulders in another and Leg /Back work on a third. I would train 2 days, then rest, then train one day and then 2 days rest. I would take the two days off between the Leg/Back and the Biceps, Forearms and Back Session to make sure those smaller muscle groups have plenty of time to recouperate. Not including Cardio, if you work hard you needn't spend more than 45 minutes a session which makes it easy to fit into a daily schedule plus it should be easy to follow.

I guess I'm just spoiled 😱

That's good too. Or he could weight train mon and tue (push/pull) take wed off then lift again on thu and fri (push pull) and take the weekend off.

Whatever he does, if he wants to get rid of that gut and have any real definition in his muscles, he's going to have to do cardio at least three times a week.

Not to mention, cardio also helps you in lasting power when doing your weight lifting. Nothing sucks more than getting muscle death half way into your workout beacuse you have no stamina.

Honestly its just inconvenient for me to drive 15 miles there and 15 miles back. So like I stated in the first paragraph.. I said there were other reasons, this being one of them. If there was a gym closer to home this thread wouldnt have been posted in the first place. =)

vi_edit and amused THANK YOU for your kind/informative replies🙂. Im probably gonna go out shopping for some equipment later this week. Also if there are any online work out guides id like those as well.

Well since he's just starting out I think it would be a good idea to take two days off before he hits the smaller muscle groups again. When he becomes an animal like you then he can switch it around🙂
