Speaking of bankrupt satellites, the Iridium satellites (the global phone ones) produce some amazing flares if you're at the perfect spot.

Arcadio, the only star you need to be able to point out is: Betelgeuse

That's basically the best star to use as an example for the different colors (temps) of stars. It's pretty easy to find too since it's in Orion.
 
Why would I learn the names of stars? There are more stars in heaven than grass in my lawn yet I've never felt a need to call each blade by name.
