Simple Network Part2

Hi all,

I am back again with my network troubles. I am trying to get my two systems connected via a hub. I have had help from a friend of mine as well. He suggested that I just plug my computer's second nic card into port 1 of the hub and the second computer into port2. My dsl modem is plugged into the onboard controller on my computer.

It seems that I am able to ping the second computer from mine but not my computer from the first. We have eliminated a hardware/cable/card problem. He feels that there is something stopping my computer from being pinged, which is how we did our testing. There is no software firewalls on either computer's nic cards that are used to create the lan.

What should I be looking for? This has him stumped, and he is a pretty good networking guru.

Thanks again

you will need something to assign an IP to that second computer. Set up ICS on the internet computer. See if you get a 192.168.0.X ip address on the second computer. If you do, then all should be good. Your hardware setup seems ok

When I setup the ics on the internet computer, do I pick the onboard controller as the home network selection or do I pick the nic card that the second computer is connected to?

Also, I get an error message when trying to view workgroup computers that states "Lan is not accessible. You may not have permissions to access this network resource. Contact your administrator to see if you have access. The list of servers for this workgroup is currently unavailable."

Any ideas what that means? I am an admin on both systems. I also tried this setup using crossover cable with the exact same problem.

Thanks again

I solved my problem, with some help from a co worker. It seems that when I installed a demo of a software firewall and then uninstalled it later on, the software still blocked my ports.

So, a reinstall of the OS and bingo! I have a LAN now!!

Thanks to all the ppl with their kinda advice!
