SimCity 2013 2.0 patch leaves cities swimming in sewage

Just as EA and Maxis seemed ready to put launch issues to bed and march onwards with the development of their “MMO”, SimCity’s 2.0 patch has infused the game with a colourful array of shiny new bugs. Fans have taken to Reddit and official forums to decry the mess, which has left some cities literally overflowing with waste.

Human excrement is at the bottom (sorry) of one common issue encountered since yesterday's patch. A concerned Redditor reported a “sewage OVERLOAD” in a town with a relatively tiny population of 4,000 that saw their outflow pipe “MAXED”. Another player beginning a new town with a similarly-sized bevy of civvies found their terminally incontinent Sims had already put 55 in the clinic.

Not all of the bugs are so ripe for comedy. Some SimCity players have found themselves stuck on loading screens when attempting to resume cities created before the patch - though they've had no problems in creating new ones. Others lucky enough to access their saves have discovered that buildings wouldn’t complete construction, instead becoming perpetual building sites.

Meanwhile, while players are celebrating the end of traffic issues caused by “clumping” fire trucks and endlessly looping transit vehicles, more dramatic pile-ups are occurring as the result of new problems. One poor mayor saw their streets turned gold yesterday with hundreds of bright yellow and totally inexplicable taxi cabs:

Wow, just wow.

Even after the launch of 2.0, the game is still pretty much the same mess. Yes, a couple small things are fixed, but the overall design and implementation is the issue. It would take a major rewrite to make the game decent.

it has bugs but nowhere near as bad as this, for anyone wanting to play a city sim game, I have and love cities xl 2011 (they have 2012 out, same thing a few new graphics)... available on steam.

I'm starting to wonder if, internally, one or more unsatisfied coder(s) would go as far as creating bugs or literally making sure that they go by unnoticed by the testers (or asking the testers to ignore said bugs) if pre-existing so as to not get fixed, as a way to piss of your employer (EA). If not, then they don't test their patches do they? If they do, how could a bug like that not get fixed before the patch is finalized?

Anyway, I'm actually sorry for EA when it comes to SimCity. I mean, sure I don't like them much but really there's limits. I'm not sure if it's "karma" or if I should restrain myself into saying that they "deserve it anyway" (well I just said it, oh well). Really though... I honestly cannot imagine EA even caring about anything regarding SimCity anymore, at all, like a delusional kid blocking his ears yelling LALALALA, or do they care?

I guess it doesn't matter, ultimately, since they probably sold enough by now, which is of course the important part.

EA is a lot like Adam Sandler. On the rare occasion they turn out something good (The Sims, Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge, Happy Gilmore, Punch Drunk Love, Funny People), but for the most part they turn out complete crap. Intentionally so. However, since they have such star power, no matter how half-arsed the project is, it will sell. Thus they can keep churning out poorly made films/games on a minimum budget, chock them full of product placement, and laugh their way to the bank. SimCity borders on Jack & Jill levels of bad. Bad because it's offensive and insults the intelligence of those who care, but worse because most folks don't and it still tops the box office.

I'm beginning to think there's something to the Max Bialystock-Leo Bloom theory. That being that you can make a lot more money with a flop than a hit.

I just see it as a sign that too many cooks are involved in the making of the program. To keep them all working, you give each a small part to work on, but due to time and money contraints, you do not have them working together / communicating with each other.

To add the extra tasty bug sauce, just most on the original coders, and offload the bug fixing to someone that did not work on the project and wonder why they take so long to get the job done (when you are paid per bug, why care if your fix causing more bugs?).

To each their own, but Funny People was one of the worst movies I've ever sat through. Until now, I've never heard anybody speak nicely of that movie. Punch Drunk Love, on the other hand, was good.

The rage of people who bought this game makes me laugh no end, much better than the entertainment the game directly provides, and free too.

Thanks to all who bought into this game and provide endless comedy for the rest of us, it's genuinely appreciated 🙂

They don't test, that is why. The only tests they might do are unit tests, which do not show the system as a whole. Unit testing a single person in the game isn't so bad, and you wouldn't notice that he/she/it is producing 100x as much excrement as he/she/it is suppose to, because the pipes are big enough to handle a single one. Multiply it by a thousand, and you have the shit-storm that is occurring.
