I already have Sim City 4 but what I meant was I need to find the copy of it. I'm sure its around somewhere. :) You're right, I keep calling it Sim City 5 to distinguish it I guess. So you're saying that the game is not a true city simulation rather a social game like The Sims? Does that mean that we peek inside the houses and see what our Sims are doing and stuff? I actually have not read any reviews on this game so this is new to me.

I haven't played it, but from the reviews it sounds like it's *more* social than previous versions. It's still a city simulator, but it apparently has random missions, zombie attacks, stuff like that. One thing that honestly just pisses me off (besides the zombies) is that apparently the safety of your nuclear power plant is reliant upon the education level of your city. As if the power company would do statistical analysis on your population and take people with the median IQ and put them in the plant. Ridiculous.

Still, I have a friend who is playing it and he insists that it's a fun game and is a proper SimCity. It just sounds like they made it less hardcore than it used to be.

Random missions and disasters were a part of SC4

I can handle disasters. Zombies aren't a real thing. They shouldn't be in a simulator. I don't expect Falcon 4.0 to have flying unicorns, nor do I expect SimCity to have zombies. As for random missions, I don't recall getting any of those. If they're part of the little click to drive stuff, I've never done that.

Assuming you can't turn them off, the zombies thing is a way bigger deal to me than the missions.

Have you ever played SimCity? Even the original SimCity in 1989 had a monster attack as a disaster, and SimCity 2000 had aliens attack.

Were those things part of the random disasters though? I've played every SimCity (except societies) for dozens if not hundreds of hours each and I don't remember the aliens or monsters being random. I know you can force them to happen, but I don't remember them happening on their own.

Well, then I'd say the same about SimCity 4. It's stupid that can happen. Of all the things though, zombies? Zombies are the worst thing ever. They're the licorice of gaming. :p

I don't remember the previous versions, but in sc4 you can turn off all of the disasters right in the settings menu, and it may even be off by default, because I don't remember ever having to turn it off in any of my cities.

Oh actually, it's not in the menu, it looks like there aren't random disasters in sc4. I knew after a couple of thousand of hours of gameplay I'd never seen one, I guess that's because they never had them in the game simulation (other than fires, meltdowns, riots)

There are mods to make them random though, and you can make them happen in God mode before you start the city (or use that ctrl alt shift God mode cheat)

Yup I remember the aliens attacks. The military base helped prevent it though (i think).

Also just read something on reddit about if someone that had a dlc abandoned a plot, you can't claim it unless you also have that dlc o_O

If you play sandbox mode in the new sim city, the disasters are basically non-existent. It's only if you play in challenge mode where you'll encounter random disasters.

I've found the disasters to have very little impact on my cities. Bulldoze whatever gets destroyed and move along.

Game is just way too easy and the city plots are too confined. Can occupy the entire map in an hour, and be making hundreds of thousands to millions/day shortly after.

That is what it sounds like. I remember having to try out many different city strategies in earlier games to not go broke

Blah I wish there was an undo. Wasted a ton of cash misplacing an expensive tourism piece in an area where where low income people live. The sudden bump in real estate value put a chip on their shoulder and suddenly their factory jobs were beneath them. Factories start screaming about not having enough workers and I don't have a square foot available to add more housing. So, I'm forced to bulldoze the very expensive building and trash up the area again because in Simcity, it is actually quite wrong to want everyone to have a nice house.

All this because i dropped it in the wrong place by accident. There should be some sort of undo button, even if it's limited to the last 5-10 seconds or something. Of course it's my fault for being sloppy, but hey this is supposed to be enjoyable! :p

Totally agree, I've plopped buildings/more often roads accidentally a number of times.

You can turn off disasters in SC4. It was either in the menu or was a code you had to put in.

simcity 2000 had a random superhero that would adopt your town. no control over htat--couldn't turn it on or off, and it may never show up in your town. But if it did, he would fix just about all disaster problems. pretty cool seeing him fly around :D

but yes, aliens and monsters were all part of random disasters. you would always select which would be available.

After a weekend of playing the game with limited issues (I believe some regional traffic and the gambling specialization is bugged), I am really excited to try to build all the different city types. With the old Sim City games you could just build one massive city for everything which does have it's appeal, but in this game you have to build a region of cities that interact and work together to be successful.

I'm pretty sure in the original Simcity the monster disaster was tied to having a nuclear meltdown occur.

Broke down and bought it last night. Worked flawlessly which was kind of amusing because I was expecting it to crap the bed. Even downloaded it onto my laptop this morning and it worked without issue.

I wonder if EA always on DRM is going to backfire on them. With the issues with the severs, I would think more people would move to a hacked server to allow themselves to play alone. They already have Origin, screwed up by requiring the servers for single player.

You can play alone, I play in a private 16 server region so I can create my own stuff. Yes you have to be online, but that isn't an issue. Plus if my friends get the game I can invite them to my region.

Agree with the undo. It would also be nice to be able to designate a particular area as having a max of a particular wealth class, so you could prevent a particular area from developing past low/medium income even if the surrounding buildings would otherwise bump it up beyond that level.
