Silverware in the dishwasher

When you use a dishwasher (the mechanical kind, not your significant other) do you put the handles down or handles up?

My roomate puts the handles down and I tell him he's going to cut himself with a knife. I put the handles up and he says they don't get as clean that way.

POLL

Handles down for spoons and forks, yes they get cleaner that way.

Handles up for knives, for safety.

Best of both worlds.

99.9% of all people never wash their hjands before emptying a dishwasher. Therefore, in the interests of sanitation, handles up, so your filthy fingers don't contaminate the nice clean dishes.

Wow, is it really that high of a percentage? If so, I am in the minority.

FWIW, I always place handles down in the dishwasher, knives and all.

Handles down to get the silverware clean. Except for knives which I always put handles up. Most dishwashers do a really bad job of cleaning if the handles are up. If you don't wash your hands before emptying, you shouldn't be emptying. Plus, I'd rather have sanitary silverware that someone might have touched than a someone else's glued on slobber from the last meal.

I usually go knives and forks handle up, spoons handle down. I do this to help prevent 'nesting'. If they are all handle up they get to close together. Most of the water in the dishwasher shoots up from the bottom so I don't see how handle down would get them cleaner.

I just throw them in either way.

Crap, I was going to start the dishwasher to run while I was at work and I forgot.

Handles up, unless there is some kind of rack that holds the flatware vertically when you put them handles down. Knives are always handles up.

One of my dumbass roommates at the start of the school year was putting knives in the dishwasher handles down and I cut myself because I didn't think anyone would do something so stupid.

Handles down... including knives.

Haven't cut myself yet... but then I watch what I'm doing. 😛

I try to spread out the knives, forks, and spoons so that each section has a good mix. In my mind this prevents the nesting mentioned earlier... it doesn't always work, but it seems to help.

The most powerful jets come from the bottom.
The dirty part needs to be closest to these jets.

Handle UP!!!!!!!1

Also, Jesus hates everyone who does handle down.

Cutting knives shouldn't be put in the dishwasher, only table style flatware should. All your cutting knives should be hand washed, dried, then immediately put in a block.

This is a lot closer than I thought it would be.

I didn't vote due to my stance on knives. I guess I'll vote handle down for the forks, spoons, and flatware knives. I think having the dirty side up gets cleaned better. I hand wash all my dishes though. My automatic dishwasher acts as storage for my plasticware :^D

I always did handles down but my wife always does it up so I've just given in and do it that way now.

They come out clean, that's all that matters to me.
