No option for "Depends."

Depends on:
- What the flatware is. Forks always go in handle-down, which is just old habit - back home, they had to go in handle-down, or else the prongs would slip through the basket and get in the way as the carriage was pulled out after a wash cycle.
- How dirty it is.
- How much stuff is in the basket already.
- Position I'm standing in - tossing it into the basket a certain way so as to ensure that it won't miss.
- Also depends on the weight distribution of the silverware in question. I'd simply tend to toss things in heavy side down, in order to ensure that it'd remain in place, and not bounce or tumble out right away.
- Chance of it becoming entangled with other items in the specific section of the basket (forks, mainly).
- Proximity to other dishes in the dishwasher, which may make annoying clanging noises during the wash cycle.

No, I'm not overthinking this. :p

Flexibility's good. That's how everything should be done.

I put the handles down on everything buy knives, which I put handles up. That way I don't cut myself- also, I figure that knives are a really simple shape and are going to get clean no matter how I put them in.

The correct option is not an option. Idiots. :D

I had a 3rd grade science experiment about this.. weird I know.

If you put them all facing the same direction they will have the tendancy to stick to each other. When 2 spoons are stuck together the top of one surface isn't going to get clean and neither is the bottom of the other one.

Putting them in haphazardly is the best option. Allthough I would still put all knives down for safety reasons.

So, in conclusion, the poll fails.

I used to have some skinny handled silverware that if it was put in handle down it would slip though the grid and stop the arm from spinning so nothing would get clean, so I got in the habit if handles up because of that and still do it even thou i no longer have that set.

And I always was my sharp knives by hand.

I think the poll is still fine. In most dishwashers, you have 8-10 subcompartments. Most full sets of silverware give you 4 place settings of utensils. So, if you have 2 sets, you have 8 matching spoons or 8 matching forks. All you have to do (as is recommended in the dishwasher manual if people ever read them) is to put one into each subcompartment. When the spoons are in different subcompartments, they can't stick to each other (handles up OR down). Within each subcompartment, you can have as many different knives, spoons, baby kittens, or forks that you want.
