Alright, you guys win. I was a jerk for messing with someones network and a douche for bragging about it on line, I'll admit it was childish.

Still, odds are if the guy/gal knows the network is open they will just curse my name for a moment and fix the SSID and change the router password. Or, like others have said, they will go on using their network oblivious to my douchery.

I hope your ashamed! /atot crowd who makes jokes of black guys and dead babies but considers the messing of a wireless connetion worthy of federal time.

Not only is it unsecured, but it's broadcasted. Broadcast = tell everyone about it. They are letting the whole neighborhood know that it's there for anyone to use. If that's not what they want, then why are they broadcasting it? If they're too dumb to secure it then it's their own fault for being retards. Sadly the law probably does take the side of the retard (as usual) but I would fight it to no end if it did actually end up in court.

Because by default all consumer routers are set to broadcast the SSID, which makes plug n play easy for consumers who bought the router. If it works right outta the box, why should the consumer change anything unless there are asshats out there who have too much time on their handle messing w/ other people's network/computer.

By your account, you have no problem if some jackass drives away your car while you left it at the drive-way to warm up in the morning? A lot of people also don't lock their doors, does it make it okay for you to go into their house, watch their TV, eat their food, and fuck their wife too? I mean it's not your fault they didn't lock their car and house, right? Jackass.

If I park a car in a public parking lot with a big sign "Feel free to take a ride" then I would expect someone to probably take it for a joy ride. That SSID broadcast is the big sign saying it's free for public use.

People need to learn. Personally I would have p2p the bandwidth out of his network. People have to learn to stop being retards when it comes to electronics. Education hurts sometimes.

The FCC and the courts might disagree, but I see nothing wrong with using someone else's WIFI. Actually hacking into their PC(s), yes, I agree, that's wrong. But just using their unsecured internet connection? Nope...they advertised and invited me (and everyone else) when they hooked up their wide-open wireless router. :) Yeah, I'm serious.

It's no different than me taking my ATM card and putting a piece of masking tape on the back and writing my PIN (b/c I'll forget it, you know!) on it and carrying it in my wallet and leaving it in some men's room somewhere.

Am I NOT TO BLAME b/c I don't really understand how "this ATM thing here" works?"

Oh, fuck no. 99.99% of the average person out there would use my ATM card and empty my accounts. And it would be 101% MY FAULT. <--that's my honest opinion.

If you don't understand the technology, please don't use it.

ps
My wife's best friend has had free internet for the past 4 years, no interruptions. Her upstairs neighbors "got the wireless web internet" and bragged about it to the entire building. I think the whole building is using their connection. :Q They're just too stupid to know any better and nobody in their right mind is going to say anything. Hell, if I lived in that bldg, I'd buy them a UPS for XMas just to ensure "MY" connection wouldn't go down.

Amen. That's my rule of thumb when it comes to technology. Either don't use it, or read up on it first, but chances are if you don't understand a technology you don't need it period.

Well actually there were two federal laws broken and it could be considered hacking.

1) access computer you don't have permission to use
2) access/changed data

Assuming you're a Comcast residental HSI customer, it's against your ToS agreement?

Not that I care one way or another, it's your internet connection. Do with it what you will.

I could give two shits about my TOS with Comcast, however...

How can they say that? So according to their TOS, WiFi networks have to be secured?

LOL...... I'm not sure I believe that. Why does it even matter?

It's the wording of it. It's your basic Cover Your Ass TOS with "Your Ass" being "Comcast's Ass"
http://www.comcast.net/terms/subscriber/

In section 7 they basically restrict usage to yourself and anyone else living at that address. Kinda stupid when you have friends over and you let them use it if they have a Wi-Fi device. This is assuming that although there is an HSI subsection, it would inherit anything within the main section.

Actually now that I think about it, changing the SSID could affect them badly. I've seen computers that won't connect to an SSID when the name's changed without reconnecting manually. I know my mom would have no idea how to re-connect. *IF* they have this problem and they're not PC savvy (like my mom lol) they'll assume the internet is broken and doubltfully be able to get it working on their own. I see Geek Squad getting a call "come help my internet won't work!"

lol.

Exactly what I was going to say. At the very least, they will need to re-connect to the new SSID, so they will see the new name.

I don't think you're that big of a douche. Sure it was childish, but it was a pretty innocent laugh. You screwed with their SSID, so it didn't interfere with their accessing the network or anything. If you stuck in a random password though THAT would have been uncalled for.

Lol, I love how you all are like "Oh, he should report and arrest that man!".

Tell me ATOT, HOW? What are the chances that someone with default unsecured wireless is able to track down someone that changed their SSID? Its not like he walked into their house and plugged in his computer. The person would have a better chance of guessing their MAC address then being able to actually find out who did it.

And what did the guy hurt? *GASP* He changed an SSID to something that hopefully the owner would realize they are not just broadcasting in their house. Quick Call the FBI, FCC, and the CIA! This man might as well killed and roasted his neighbors babies!

I wouldn't have changed it myself, but this really isn't a big deal like some of you are making it out to be.

I'll tell you how.

1) Have a sniffer or aeropeek running
2) Capture everything
3) Mac address is recorded, even if you like to randomize it see #4
4) Use spectrum analyzer and directional antenna to find offending wireless card

The OP accessed and changed data on a computer he did not have permission to use (the router). That is a federal crime.

And that assumes that.

1) The guy that doesn't even change his default password HAS aeropeek running.
2) The guy that doesn't even change his default password knows how to capture everything.
3-4) The guy that doesn't even change his default password can convince the FBI to come down to his house with a spectrum analyzer (he isn't going to have one) analyze the data he collected, find the MAC address of the offending pc and then track it down to the house.

Umm, yeah, I don't know about you, but I find this scenario pretty unlikely. If the guy didn't have a sniffer running already, there is pretty much no way he could find out what the OPs mac-address was. And even then, the op can claim that his laptop randomly connected to someone else's router.

my router is left default. i dont care if someone uses my internet connection in a pinch. but im certainly not leaving it default for that purpose.

i leave it default because i dont care. i leave it unsecured because security is a pain in the ass.

if someone changed my ssid i would laugh and change it back or respond with an ssid of "i want it insecure". if someone changed my password i would reset it and then set my own router password. if more crap happened cause it was unsecured, i would secure it because someone was a dick and ruined my convenient setup.

meh, I do it for fun.

You forgot about DHCP where the mac address is recorded in the DHCP server (router in this case). No sniffer needed.

The mac address may be recorded, however, its still pretty easy for the OP to claim it to be purely accidental. Depending on the population, that could happen quite frequently (I know I will try to connect to random WLANS while driving with someone, just for fun :D)
