Silly neighbors and their WiFi.

Looks like someone in my neighborhood just got a new wireless router and never setup any security for it and even left the password at default, so I had a bit of fun and changed the SSID from ?linksys? to ?Turn on your security, Dummy.?.

I could have walked around with my laptop until I found the house and told them to fix it, but it's cold out and this was more fun.

EDIT: Alright, you guys win. I was a jerk for messing with someones network and a douche for bragging about it on line, I'll admit it was childish.

Still, odds are if the guy/gal knows the network is open they will just curse my name for a moment and fix the SSID and change the router password. Or, like others have said, they will go on using their network oblivious to my douchery.

Yeah, I'm some kind of jerk for letting someone I don't know that they are vulnerable to an attack by causing them a minor inconvenience from changing the network ID.

Shame on me! No cookie!

Going onto a forum to brag about how you got onto a neighbor's router to change the SSID for the fun of it?

Yes, you are a jerk.

Oh and by the way, I knocked over a handicapped wheelchair bound man out in the snow today. Aren't I so cool!

Who cares?

My network is open and renamed with a password.

If someone wants to use it, they're welcome to. Why should I care?

I'm going to leave my keys in the ignition and when a thief comes along, I'm going to jump out of the bushes and yell, "Ah ha!"

If I see a neighbour with their keys in the ignition, I'll key TAKE YOUR KEYS OUT OF YOUR CAR on their car. I'm doing them a favour!

I do to.

I would only but hope some dick-weed doesn't screw with it and ruin it for everyone else.

Assuming you're a Comcast residental HSI customer, it's against your ToS agreement?

Not that I care one way or another, it's your internet connection. Do with it what you will.

i'm with the OP.. changing their SSID doesn't really affect them, and it drops a nice pretty hint that they need to secure things.

That's a good question!

I'm not knowingly giving the signal to anyone else but I'm not protecting the signal to the best of my abilities.

it doesn't effect them because they won't know. MOST people who have unsecure networks with the default SSID couldn't even tell you what the SSID is because they've never seen it. My mom has zero idea what the SSID of her wireless is, I could make it whatever I wanted and she'd have no clue it was even changed.

Chances are the SSID that OP changed will no unnoticed by the people who use it.

Sorry, regardless of the condition of my stuff, you don't have a right to screw with it unless it's causing you unduely harm.

If you don't have enough guts to walk over and tell me about it, you have no right screwing with it.

Haha that's awesome. People have to learn though, seriously. Computers/equipment are not foreign anymore, they are an every day device and have been around for a long time. People should know how to properly use them by now, at least at a basic level. It's like leaving your car at a busy parking lot with your keys in it with doors unlocked. It's common sense not to do that because it might get stolen.

Report for what? Using a free open service?

Not only is it unsecured, but it's broadcasted. Broadcast = tell everyone about it. They are letting the whole neighborhood know that it's there for anyone to use. If that's not what they want, then why are they broadcasting it? If they're too dumb to secure it then it's their own fault for being retards. Sadly the law probably does take the side of the retard (as usual) but I would fight it to no end if it did actually end up in court.
