I don't know how many of you may have seen this video, but the message is perfect - strive to find some silence in this noisy world. Whether that be running, biking, hiking, walking, whatever. Unplug, disconnect, go.

Silence

The problem is that I listen to my mp3 player when I run. :p

Although if I got to run in the environment he did at the end, I may have done it without music since ambient sounds of nature is more relaxed.

I use my iphone to listen to music when I'm running on the paved suburban trails I use frequently, but when I'm on real trails I use it only for GPS, especially if I'm with my friends or training partners.

I work in an environment a lot like the one Adam typifies in the video, lots of people all around me talking, banging away on keyboards, etc. And then my drive home from downtown Orlando out into the country where I live is full of traffic noise and commotion. I find myself overloaded after 2 or 3 days and I literally HAVE to go to the local trail systems on the weekend to get some balance back in my mind.

I just wish my local trail system looked like the one in the video. Imagine running from your front door and out into the mountains in 30 minutes? I listened to a podcast he was interviewed in over the weekend and he can summit his local high peak within an hour of leaving his house. Yeah, he's fast, but he's also quite fortunate (admittedly) to live where he doe. *jealous*

This concept of silence is a large part of why I close Colorado to live. It is very easy to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city and get somewhere exceedingly peaceful.

I dream of moving to Colorado. Very little work in my biz for me there though. If I could live anywhere, Fort Collins/Loveland would be at the top of my list.

I live in NYC so unfortunately I don't have much access to remote locations unless I want to travel just to go for the run. Though the noise doesn't really bother me so much as the obstacles from pedestrian traffic that I have to avoid. I also work in an office/cubicle environment but it's not nearly as dull and boring as the video make it out to be... not in my case at least.

If I could be a "professional" trail runner I'd go for it. I am in a Luddite phase right now, I could stand to live a non-techie lifestyle for a few years. But to each their own.

Given my hectic job as an ER nurse I feel the same way. Running is a chance to unplug. It is also why I love to garden. Quiet, peaceful and being a part of nature. I'm fortunate to have a place to really escape. My family owns 125 acres of land about an hour north of Grand Rapids here in Michigan. It is a 3 hour drive to get there but it is in untouched woodlands with big rolling hills. The perfect place to unplug and be with nature. It is why I've fallen so hard for trail running. It is a chance to literally run away from the modern hectic craziness.

We do really love it here. There seems to be such a hodgepodge of industry here, I would be surprised if there wasn't anything that fits your skill set. Energy/Aerospace? Loveland/Ft.Collins area is great.

If you are ever in the area, PM me and we'll go for some runs.
