Signs a 40GB 75GXP is Failing?

My cousin's 40GB 60GXP may be failing. According to him, it's making clicking noises and gets the following error message after the POST sequence (Win98):

"Pri Master Disk HDD S.M.A.R.T. capability disable"

Is this a dead drive? Can he salvage anything?
 
I'd say it's on its way out. If he can still boot into it, tell him to backup all of his data. If it is less than 3 years old, return it to IBM and they should replace it for free.
 
Bye Bye Hard drive. Any time you get a S.M.A.R.T warning, its going to die in the near future.

Yea, IBM will replace it....with another drive that probably is going to die. Weird how that happens, huh?

i rmad my 30gig 75gxp and i got a 75gxp

Bah, my 30gb 75GXP finally croaked on me. It first developed bad sectors a year ago but since I was reluctant to RMA it and risk getting a refurb back, I just low level formatted it and it was working fine until yesterday. Last nite it started making horrible grinding/clicking noises from out of nowhere (which it didn't do the first time it developed bad sectors) and my system crashed. When I attempted to reboot, my mobo was not be able to detect the hard drive. Man I hope they send me a 60GXP or something non-75GXP...

Luckily I overnighted a WD1000B from outpost.com (this was in december). The 75GXP is now sitting on my dresser, unused. That is probably where it will stay
