Projected specs:

About 8-10kg, looks about a meter long, a foot wide, will cost maybe $10-12k.

Also, did anyone else notice the lack of both HSM and OS? Hmm....

OS? Are you going to be hand holding it?

This is a tripod exclusive lens.

Still, at 500mm, camera shake will be evident even on a tripod.

Updated figures (from a Sigma rep at PMA): No official length yet, weight will be about 35lbs, pricerange will be between $6k - 7k.

I want to see Canon even try to release a 500/2.8 at that pricerange. That is honestly the 1200/5.6's little brother (about the same lens speed), and the 1200 cost over $80,000. Even if the Sigzilla optics aren't quite L-grade (and I'm sure they will be, it is based off the 120-300 and has similar optical quality, according to the rep) 6-7k is VERY reasonable for a lens of that magnitude.

Unless, of course, they forget to include HSM 😉

I know nothing about lenses. What do those specs mean? You can take a close up picture from hundreds of feet away? You can take a super zoomed photo from short distance?

I'm clueless on optics.

At that price you could get Canon 70-200mm f:2.8 IS, 400mm f:2.8 IS, and 500mm f:4 IS, and still have some change left for tax. For an extra few hundred bux more you could get the 600mm f:4 IS for the kit instead of the 500mm IS.

Thats crazy heavy.

The whole point of a f/2.8 lens is to use shutter speeds that will eliminate shake at telephoto.

Vignetting is a wide angle problem. And the image quality of long lenses is usually easier to get right.

Sure, but some people prefer to pay for convenience, although I'm not sure this lens could be considered convenient.

That thing needs a jeep for a tripod

Heh... now I have a mental pic of one of those old war jeeps with a tripod mounted machine gun, except with this lens on a camera instead of the MG.

Yep, they forgot HSM. And the Canon 1200 was custom built. It was never 'for sale' for any consumer no matter how much money they had.
Knowing Sigma's track record on supertelephoto QC issues, there is a reason why Canon's are at a different price range.
