Sigma's often get cute nicknames like Sigmonster, and Bigma's. I wonder which nickname will stick with this one.
I don't need this lens, but I WANT one.

Jiminy Shiznat!

I saw the first photo and I was like, meh, nothing to compare it to relative size wise, big deal.

Then noticed that it has a camera on it...that thing is huuuuuge.

If 500 mm isn't enough reach a dedicated 2x Tele Converter is supplied with the lens as standard and changes it into a 400 - 1000 mm F5.6. Combine that with a typical APS-size 1.5x FOV crop on a digital SLR and you've got either 300 - 750 mm F2.8 or a 600 - 1500 mm F5.6 (better have a good tripod).

who would really need that thing? useless for sports photographers since it would be too bulky.

Good applications for that lens' focal length. Especially birding. Surf photographers would consider this lens as well.

I saw that thing and thought there was no way in hell it was real.
Then I realized I was at dpreview.com.

Projected specs:

About 8-10kg, looks about a meter long, a foot wide, will cost maybe $10-12k.

Also, did anyone else notice the lack of both HSM and OS? Hmm....

I can't imagine the vignetting...and image quality at 500mm 2.8. I'd have to guess they won't be that great...

OS? Are you going to be hand holding it?

This is a tripod exclusive lens.
