I have one. One of my favorite handguns, extremely accurate right out of the box.
The only downside is that it is a little thick to use an IWB holster and be comfortable. But that's why God created John Moses Browning - so be can bring to the world the perfection of the 1911.

Stellar weapon if you are OK with a DA/SA pistol (which I personally am not). The old P228 is perhaps a marginally better carry weapon, as it is lighter, but they're both top-drawer. If I were looking to carry a pistol I think I'd look at the single-stack Para LDAs, but that is really a matter of personal preference.
I'm looking at this one because I know the guy and it would be a private party sale. I wouldn't mind the DA/SA aspect of it too much I don't think. I will borrow it a bit before the purchase is made though.
I'm not a huge fan of the 1911 style. Not sure why, I just don't like the look. I've shot a few Glocks before and wasn't a fan of them. My shot patterns weren't that tight... at least not as tight with the XD 9mm and everyone and their brother owns a Glock.
I don't like 1911's either. I can't reach the slide release without moving my grip, the form itself just doesn't fit me. I don't bad mouth them though, I just don't like em.
My first pistol was a Sig p229. Loved it, also loved my P226. I'm hoping maybe eventually if I wish hard enough Sig will bring the P250 to California. That, or just make some 10-round magazines so I can get it through private party.
For carry use, I like my kahr PM9. Thinking about getting a P9 or a K9 to compliment it.
You should also take a look at HK's. The usp, p2000, p30 is a fine weapon. If you want an alloy body, hold a cz in your hand. the 75 b is a fine pistol.
My advice is to shoot as many guns as you can. See what fits your hand best. See what you like. Then buy that.

i carried a 229 and a glock 22 as my off duty. Both in .40 cal.
-They both recoiled very sharply compared to their 9mm cousins. the sig seeming to have more muzzle rise and kick due to the bulk of the weight being higher up in the hand. both were a little unpleasant to use for extended sessions, but i favored the glock's lesser felt recoil.
-CC-wise, the glock was far lighter on the belt and didn't poke me in the back as much when driving/sitting. but there was a serious "pucker" factor going from a sig with its nice safe long DA trigger to the 'ready to fire at the slightest pull' glock "safe-action". department required all glock users get the NY 12# trigger mod.
if all you are going to do is range shoot, make sure you like shooting the 229. I chose the 40 cal for terminal effectiveness, but i generally regarded it as a work tool rather than a recreational device.

the iron sights for the p229 was kind of weird, so i sawed it off (along with about an inch of the barrel) and made my own iron sights with some solder. i've been very pleased with the result, the gun is lighter, sounds better, and so far, never been a single crime or rape in my household. *knocks on wood*
edit: ps, did the mod quite a while ago, need to be extra careful as to not brick the gun. semi-auto's are always a pain, but was well worth it for me

yeah, i don't believe this for a second. if in fact you really did this, please give up all of your guns NOW. You didn't have to cut it off, you can have a gunsmith remove it...hell, you could probably do it yourself if you wanted to.
edit: oh snap, i missed the part where you cut off the barrel also...why? did you cut the slide too? wtf, this has to be complete shens.

It's hard to imagine someone who can afford a Sig doing something so retarded - sounds more like the gunsmithing of someone with a Raven Arms or similar Saturday night special. The idea of hacksawing off the barrel and slide of a Sig is something I literally can't imagine.
