Sidewinder Strategic Commander Controller - free after $30 in rebates.

does it only work for stradegy games?

I was thinking this might be nice instead of a keyboard for fps games. That would be fun!

Man, these things are goin for peanuts on eBay. I figured I could always hock it if I didn't like/use/need it. Ain't goin to get much for it though! Glad it was free!

Do I need it? probably not, Though I usually play RTS and turned based strategy games. Do I want it? not sure but hey its free 🙂 The $20 MIR from Microsoft looks OK, should be fast, but the $10 MIR from CompUSA welll I am not so sure.... Anyways here is a couple of positve reviews.... follow the links ..... And let me know your opinions. CompUSA near woodfield mall, IL has about 20 left if anyone is interested.

this product could've been better had it supported simultaneous button presses (not talking about shift keys either) i figured this would be good for counter-strike, i didn't like the 3rd degree of motion

least i got it for free
 
I just got this controller and it's really great for RTS games. It can work for any game you want (or even applications like Photoshop) since you can program any keyboard sequence/combination on the fly. I'd get it even if there wasn't the $30 rebate. Speaking of which, I got a $30 MIR from Microsoft at the compUSA I went to instead of a $20 Microsoft and $10 CompUSA rebate which is great since the Microsoft rebates come back within weeks.
 
SOME PROBLEM WITH REBATE?

Do you guys think there are SOME PROBLEM WITH REBATE? I got a $30 rebate from MicroSoft too instead of $20 MIR from Microsoft and $10 from CompUSA as it was advertised. I went to Microsoft website and they only have $20 MIR. Can't find any mention about $30 rebate. And the $30 MIR does not mention anything about having to purchase from CompUSA. This is my proposation. You could buy the Strategic Commander for about $25 ( pricegrabber.com) and send in the $30 MIR. Make $5 buck profit!!! Can someone call the rebate phone number to confirm that it IS a $30 rebate.... I would but I will be really busy tomorrow. In the same note, I don't want people who bought from CompUSA to be shafted with a $20 rebate instead of $30 too....
 
It clearly says in the rebate form that "... Only original coupons will be accepted. ...". Does this means the mail in rebate form in compusa.com is useless?
 
I got the one rebate for 30 also, i went to my cUSA sunday and they were out. Went in today and snaged the last one, Redondo Beach CA. Guy said they don't know what they will get when the truck shows up in the morning. So if you want one keep checking. Shoot they Got Empire Earth at my local frys for $20. No One lives forever is on the shelf hardly explored. What a hobbie.

Great tool for any strategy game, but you can use it for anything.
 
I may set it up and use it as a big mouse, so I will have mice on both hands. One click launch anandtech board, and etc.
 
Save your time going to City Of Industry, California because they were out when I went yesterday.....

Any CompUSA employee know if they restock free rebate items? I doubt it since it is supposed to get us in. I was actually going to buy one but I will hold off. I am sure it will be a future rebate item yet again. Maybe MS is making room for a newer version? Also, is that MS rebate good if I but this at Best Buy?
 
Hey, I lost the installation CD somewhere in the shuffle of moving. Any of you nice people would burn me a copy and mail it to me will be much much appretiated.
I opened it, plugged in the USB cable, and lost the CD (and that was a year ago). I still want to see how it works, so it's been sitting in my drawer for a year instead of in the trash.
Online only gives you new profiles, not the program.

I didn't see the "only original coupons accepted" for the rebate - my CompUSA didn't have any. So now I'm supposed to hit all the other nearby CompUSAs until I find one? I hate those guys...15% restocking fee is bad enough, plus at the Pleasanton CA store I watched a couple of idiot employees knocking over big piles of TDK CD-RW drives when I was there yesterday - I'd never buy anything like that from them.
 
I can't install the damm strategic commander on XP home edition! and they are both from Microsoft !! Well, when I try to install the software it goes to step 1 installing the software and then just hang there. I can't do anything without the software. Any suggestion are appreciated. Thankz....
