Shut Down Ghost Gun Sites

Gun control group calls for shutdown of ‘ghost gun’ sites.
A ghost gun is a firearm without serial numbers.
Who needs a firearm that can't be traced????

A gun control group founded by former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords asked two web hosting companies on Friday to shut down websites selling parts and machines that help make untraceable homemade firearms known as “ghost guns.”
The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence asked that Shopify and DreamHost -- hosts of GhostGunner.net and GhostGuns.com -- disable the websites for violating the hosting companies’ terms of service.

Hey I didn't know about it either but I do remember reading an article years ago about unfinished guns. I don't have a drill press to make the trued holes to complete a build so I never gave them any thought. Yes I'm a Democrat that fully supports 2A.

We have to talk about people dying in the shower first. There is nothing to be done about sites where people can buy almost complete weapons through the mail with no checks.

As a 2A supporter and a gun owner since I was 8 years old ( hunting squirrels ). I do not see a use for a gun without a serial number and I agree these sites should probably be shut down.

What's the appeal of a non-serialized firearm? What are the advantages?

People like to stick it to the man. Or feel like they are, anyway. Otherwise, if something is made by your hands, customized, etc., it has different value. It's not about practical purpose, but virtually all gun ownership is impractical anyway.

I didn't know about these sites. Look like some pretty good deals on mostly complete kit. Thanks!

this is the perfect example of a partisan hack incapable of rational thought and the core problem with trumpism.

I love firearms and 2A. I can't think of a single non-illegal advantage of owning a gun without a serial number.

and these are examples of rational and reasonable thought, kudos to both of you.

I get all that. When current regulations were formulated back in 1968 today's tech was utterly unanticipated. Only a fully trained & equipped gunsmith could create firearms from scratch. It took a lot of time, skill & equipment. Various people since then have made it possible for any drill press equipped swinging dick in America to skirt the law-

If you want to go into production it's a piece of cake-

Depending on which State you in live in, you may be required to put a serial number on any gun that you make. Years ago I thought about building an AR-15 doing this, but I had no way of heat treating the lower receiver.

Yea there ain't nothing like blowing a squirrel's brain out at 8 years old. Think it had deep lasting effect had on your psyche?

It's a Country vs City thing. Don't over analyze
He probably grew up in an area where you could actually hunt, plus had tons of vermin. I'd also bet his Father and his friends Fathers were pretty involved with teaching them gun respect.
Geek does have to realize that we all didn't grow up in that area. Where I grew up there really wasn't any safe area where a gun could be shot without being close to someone's house or yard, most of the wild life had disappeared from development and not many people owned guns because there really wasn't any place to shoot them and if needed the Police could be over pretty quickly.

I presume these are online stores selling component parts for AR-15s or AR variants. Perhaps up to and including mostly complete firearms less the lower receiver which is the controlled part that must be shipped to a FFL. Or is this site selling CAD drawings and the such so folks can machine their own?

That's correct. And you can machine your own receiver as long it is for your own use(not for sale).

Basically all this. It's kinda like building a car from a kit, for most people it would be both impractical and undersirable. For the "correct" type of person who likes to tinker, has time on their hands, and the desire to "build it with their own hands" then I guess this would be for them.

not sure why they're going after these sites specifically. there are plenty of places that sell 80% lowers.

also, with the quote in the article

Attorneys for the gun control advocacy group said the homemade weapons are increasingly being used in crimes and asked each of the companies to “invoke its policies to help stem the tide of this illegal, deadly behavior.”

i would be interested to know what fraction of gun crimes are committed with an unserialized firearm vs one that has been de-serialized (i.e. the S/N is ground off).

for the most part, an 80% build is going to be a hobbyist activity. i doubt people intent on committing crimes are going to go through the effort of building their own firearm. it's not hard, but it's not as simple as making a straw purchase, if you're planning on doing something illegal.

That's the thing, there are plenty of stolen guns out there that criminals have no need to bother making their own.

Not quite. All you need to finish an 80% AR receiver is a drill press & the kit I linked above. Just follow the easy instructions that come with it. No FFL or background check required. It will have no serial #, obviously. None of the other parts require a background check, either, nor does as much ammo as you care to buy. Just point & click to have it all delivered to your door. Add a bump stock, drum magazines, laser dot sight & anything else you want. Piece o' cake.

This is the first i've heard of this. No idea about it. Right now my give a damn meter hasn't moved, maybe it will later............after I check it out.
