Shows that are better or in the same league as Battlestar Galactica

Well in your opinion what shows are better or in the same league as Battlestar galactica overall in terms of action, acting, character development, plot and dialogue.

I desperately need some new shows to watch since I really don't have much to do over the summer.

Besides previously mentioned Dexter:
Boardwalk Empire-highly recommended Prohibition drama
Game of Thrones-haven't watched but heard it's very good
Walking Dead-zombies series on AMC
Falling Skies-recently premiered alien invasion series on TNT
Premium channels like HBO/Showtime and AMC produce good shows.

2nd for Game of Thrones. My wife and I were instantly hooked, now I may have to read the books and it's going to be a long, hard wait for the next season.

Otherwise the only show we have ever really jumped into was Stargate. IT's not as good quality as BSG but still good and there are 14+ seasons to watch between all the versions so that should keep you busy 😉 .

Seems a lot of people forgot about the earlier seasons of BSG, when it was fantastic. Kinda went downhill in the 3rd and 4th seasons.

No, Mormons in Space always sucked...especially in the 70's-80's, but even the "newer" version was pretty bad.

The Wire.

But I didn't particularly care for BSG...it's one of those shows that seems like I should really like it, but I couldn't get into it. Try Firefly, Stargate SG-1/Atlantis/Universe..

I had never heard of Firefly until it was discussed here earlier this year. Not the best show I've ever seen, but fun to watch. I was disappointed that it only went one season.

If you liked the cast, try Chuck, Castle, Dollhouse, and Terminator: SCC. I also need to watch The Cape...haven't got there yet, though.

good first couple of seasons with lots of promise, followed by a slow downhill slide and the worst ending that could possibly be concieved?

i think you're looking for 'lost.'

well, for those reasons alone...many, many shows, b/c BSG is very mediocre in that regard.

you say BSG, so I assume you want something like sci fi, but if that is your pinnacle of quality production then...yikes.

anyway, I very much like BSG and as far as sci fi shows go, I haven't seen anything better.

Hahahaha, THIS. Fuck that show ended up stinking it up at the end.

OP:

The Wire (best show ever)
The Killing (just finished its first season... fantastic)

If you want scifi, try Farscape, the Stargates, and apparently Firefly (haven't gotten to this one yet).

Oh, I also enjoy The Mentalist.

Non scifi: Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad (next up on my list)...

well, I'm watching it right now, and I see no problem with the final bits of season 4.

just got to the part where John? --the main Cylon dude (Quantum Leap guy) is having the long conversation with the last of the final 5, after her previously-unknown resurrection.

I thought that was rather brilliant for the series. His character came out, for the first time, as particularly evil--extremely villainous--his very real anger over the limitations programmed into him, his close relation to humans. It was quite awesome.

I was wondering where that writing and character development was for the previous 3.5 seasons. :\

it would appear you feel the same as me about BSG and/or lost- basically the last two long running serials i will ever watch due to the massive heartbreak they caused- cancellation would've been less a slap in the face.

so i would DEFINITELY recommended firefly. if you have trouble getting into it, watch the movie (serenity) first. the latter wouldn't be hurt by a little exposition, but it pulls you in much faster without confusing you too much.

dunno about farscape or stargate. never saw the appeal to those, though i do generally like scifi.

If you're looking for Sci-Fi,
Stargate SG1 / Atlantis are solid.
Flashforward was pretty good imo, but only ran for 1 season.
Same with Firefly
Lost is very similar to BSG in that it had a great first season, then went to hell.
Babylon 5 is an oldie, but still great if you can get past the first season, and the dated special effects.

Chuck never interested me, I'm a Castle fan...but I view it as a comedy, not a serious drama...Dollhouse doesn't interest me, and The only episode of T: SCC I ever watched sucked badly.
The Cape looked very stupid in the commercials, never watched it.

I loved BSG so here are some shows I also enjoy, many have been mentioned:

Breaking Bad (AMC)
Game of Thrones (HBO)
Deadwood (HBO)
The Wire (HBO, one of the top programs ever)
The Walking Dead (AMC)
