Shoveling Snow

XZeroII

I took it upon myself to shovel my entire driveway all winter. So far we've had about 20" of snow this season and I can assure you that it's a much better workout than going to the gym. After 30 minutes of shoveling, I'll come in the house and wear shorts because I'm so hot and it takes me at least 20 minutes to finally cool down. My legs and arms ache for quite awhile after that.

Driveway is probably about 40 feet long and about 15 feet wide.

LOL, I decided to skip the gym today because I'd have to shovel the driveway prior to leaving then when I got back and yes it's usually my back that's sore afterwards:shocked:

I'm a native Floridian, what is this "snow" you speak of? 😛

Since we are discussing good old manual labor as a killer workout- I took a construction job with 1 of my Bro's company in '05, building the Operations Support Building #2 across from the V.A.B. at Kennedy Space Center for just that purpose. I have way too much free time in life, so it was a welcome change from my normal routine. Getting paid scale+OT for everything didn't hurt either. I told my bro it would be like getting paid to workout every day, so I told him to hire me, jokingly.

Well, he did, and I spent all day doing anything our subs weren't contracted for. And a bunch of stuff that was part of their contract, but that we were able to save time on if I did it. *Project bonuses for meeting and beating deadline* or that was after NASA security and feds showed up 2 different times and did a sweep for illegals on the construction site. Their employers obviously lied when vouching for them so they could get security clearance and a badge.

Lots of digging, various grinders, saws, and drills/hammer drills, heavy lifting&moving, chip hammers of various sizes, and taking a 5ft 8-10kg? breaking bar to big mounds of cement some asshats left there to dry!?! when finished with their work. I couldn't get anyone to give up enough extension cords to reach from the temp power points setup on those levels so I could use the chip hammers. Found out later it was all part of my workout plan, courtesy of my bro and co.

Oh, and hurricon *think def-con* was a blast too! everytime a T.S. would get within a certain distance, they'd lower the hurri-con level, and I'd get to remove anything loose on property, *Including removing debris that ended up in the surrounding swampland despite the silt fencing *stupid EPA 😛* while gators grudgingly moved off from where I was working* I have a pic of one of the smaller gators. Plus strap down tons of shat the subs used, and make sandbags, then use them on entrances on the ground and roof.

When the demo crew was tearing down the old portables the O.S. #2 was replacing ripped out the underground 15,000v? cable, I got to do a shat load more digging and chip hammering in the middle of a Florida August too, wearing jeans, work boots, and a hardhat of course, oh the joy!

By far the best workout though, was 2 solid weeks of taking an all metal scraper that went about 2-3kg to 1000's of ft of floor space to remove all the "mud" from the dry wallers, and splats of other harder to get up stuff from various other subs. No HVAC yet, windows already put in, Fl. summer, about 95f-105f everday on the 2-4 floors. Also, helping Mario, a really cool guy, carry drywall up the stairwells to the 5-6th floor, over and over. The punch list at the end was like pulling teeth, but easier work.

I lost 10lbs and 2 notches on my belt at that job, and I didn't even go in out of shape, just well fed and with a active lifestyle. 🙂

I think it's really a good workout. Doing some things that you really need to exert a lot of effort is really a good workout. It is simply doing an exercise in a very different way.

It is good but I found last winter if my knee didn't hurt it was my shoulder and if not that, my back. I got sick of the wind filling in my driveway after shovelling so went and grabbed a snowblower from home depot in Feb. Winter was slow to come, so they were desperate to sell; got 30% off and paid $450 for a pretty nice one. I have to say, it's bloody fantastic. Shovelling is not fun!

After having to shovel the driveway out yesterday I've come to the3 conclusion that shoveling snow for exercise is way over rated.

Haha, not very fun is it?

Working your way through the process of getting wood to burn in your fireplace is another good way of skipping the gym.
Taking a house down with a crowbar is another...
