I did something to my to my shoulder a few weeks ago doing chest flys. It was tender and sore to the touch up around my collar bone. Most of the pain would come from toughing the bone, not the muscle. So I took a few weeks off and thought I was good to go. Went light yesterday and on my last set, the pain came back. Its mostly a burning but when I touch it, it a sharp pain. Any ideas?

Edit: Did some chest today and kept it light. Felt good for the most part with a little tweaks here or there. I did notice on the way home that whenever I would turn the wheel of my car to the right, which I do mostly left handed, I would get the burning. This is about the only time I notice it now but now its tender to the touch up on my collar bone.

Does it hurt directly on the collar bone? Where along the collar bone (closest to your sternum or closer to your shoulder)? Does it hurt underneath or above the collar bone? Does the pain feel deep or shallow?

Just trying to get an idea of the exact location of the pain you're experiencing. There's 2 joints there - the sternoclavicular and acromioclavicular joints. The first rib and the brachial plexus are deep to the clavicle. Above the clavicle are the scalenes and below the clavicle is the clavicular head of the pec major. In addition, lung tissue can refer pain near the clavicle, but I doubt it'd be brought on by a specific weightlifting exercise.

Also, just in case, any numbness or tingling? If not, how would you describe the pain?

More towards the shoulder, above the bone, shallow. While looking at myself, the pain is around the bump or point of the collar bone. I thought maybe that was the issue but I noticed it on the other side as well. No numbness or tingling just a constant warm/slight burning. Also, with certain movements ( Mostly swinging my arm back) causes a tugging or pulling.

That's most likely caused by the acromioclavicular joint then, considering it is toward the shoulder, shallow, and frequently presents as burning. AC joint pain can come about due to multiple reasons - most of which include having poor shoulder control and improper shoulder mobility (in certain planes and directions). If it bothers you, you could see a doctor about it, but they'll just say it's bursitis and give you NSAIDs. You could see a PT about it, but that would take a fair amount of your time and effort. The simple solution, I'd say, is to look into http://www.mobilitywod.com and find the shoulder videos. They're fairly useful and easy to apply. If anything hurts while you do it though, stop. Last but not least, maybe you need to limit your ROM. Try to move the weight to a point PRIOR to the pain. You may not even go parallel with the ground, but you're still getting a good workout and you hopefully won't have pain.

Thanks SC. One of these days I need to pay you for all the advice.

Two weeks now without lifting and the pain is gone for the most part. The only time it hurts is when I push or carry anything heavy in my left hand.

Well so much for that. Woke up this morning and my shoulder is on fire. Looks like no lifting for the rest of the week and the doctor on Monday. I hate set backs like this.

I'm going through something similar... what really sucks is that in my experience you'll always have a setback like this right when you start making some real progress.

You said it. Just as I started to get some gains this happens. WHY?

So I finally went to the Dr. today. She thinks I might have a small tear in my rotator cuff. Gave me some anti inflammatory to take for the time being and is sending me to an ortho.
