As a Military Policeman, I have served with women since I came into the service. I can honestly say that I hold the same standards when it comes to my fellow soldiers. That standard is, there are some of them (men and women) I would go into combat with, there are many more that I wouldn't trust in a dire situation. I have known quite a few female MPs who were hard as diamonds and integrated with the men just fine. They were content to look at Playboy, didn't care about having to bare some flesh when necessary (showering, etc.) and all in all held their own against many of the men in the unit. Likewise, there were some that could do none of that and probably shouldn't be MPs, but I've known my fair share of male soldiers who fit the same category.

If you want to look at females in combat, the Military Police Corps is a good place to start. It's been said several times in my career that the MP Corps is the closest women will get to combat under current doctrine and I'm inclined to agree.

BTW, I do think that more women should be snipers. I think it is ingenious for the Russians to enlist them in such a role. They typically travel light, they move with more stealth than a bulky, heavy male soldier and they have a degree of patience a few ticks above most men that I know. Women also tend to have a heightened sense of intuition and seem to sense danger more readily than most men too. Plus, I think women would have less issue killing men than even men do, but that could just be my opinion.

That's easy, they just imagine it's their ex-husband ;)

I could say somethign like... ahem...

"Why? Our meals are precooked."
OR
"I'm sorry all the positions have been filled by industrial washing machines."

But honestly I don't see a problem with it, but I definately think they should be held to the same standards of training if they want to face the same conditions that their male counterparts face. The enemy won't show partiality because they're a female, and neither should we in training. As long as you look at it logically and practically then I don't think there is anything wrong with allowing it.

I would recommend in your essay not just saying "No, the women are weak."

The more that women get brought into units, the more sexual harassment classes we have to take. I've spent more time in the last year in a classroom learning about how its bad to touch girls then I have firing weapons.

I have always held to the standard that if someone is qualified to do a job, there's no reason not to let them. Having said that, if we set certain minimums for performance in the military for men, I don't understand why it would change for women? Do we have special gear for women in the field? Do radio waves or bullets or wire transmissions change if a woman is at a console?

i agree with you. if a person, male or female, is able to pass the same training then they have the right to be there and fight for their own country. if they cant, then they have no business fighting in the front lines, and can better serve doing non-combat work.

I was a Marine grunt. I never saw a woman who could do what I did.
I knew good women Marines don't get me wrong but humping a 100-200 pound pack is something else.

I think if the women can meet the exact same fitness standards as their male counterparts, then they should be able to.

"Gays in the military. Here's my take. Anyone DUMB ENOUGH ... to join the military ... should be let in" - Bill Hicks

Same goes for women.

Yea you have to be real dumb to go into the military

Food, clothing, and shelter provided for while you get a salary, job experience, and a great reference on your resume. And they pay a large amount of money towards college. Geeze that is a HORRIBLE deal eh?

Ask people if going to Iraq is any fun. FYI: what you see on TV isn't real.

"Get a salary"
Summer jobs/ co-op/internships?

"job experience"
thaat's what internships and co-os are for. RELEVEVANT experience is needed, not knowing how to clean a rifle.

"great reference"
All employers want to see is that your not lazy. Anyone can put internships and co-ops on a resume. Just show that you have the drive to improve yourself. Doesn't require risking ones life.

"pay a large amount of money towards college"
student loans? Grants? Work through college?

"Geeze that is a HORRIBLE deal eh"
Yup, in return you just have to go to Iraq and risk your life. GREAT DEAL! Oh, and you don't start your professinal career till much later in life? Wonderful. And interest on student loans are tax deductable. AWESOME. And you can make money while in school. Oh...

Really? I just spoke with a Marine grunt (Mortarman) yesterday who was just over in Iraq/Kuwait. In and around An Nasiriyah and although he came close to Baghdad, he was never there.

Care to guess what he said? He didn't mind being there, in fact, he loved it. And he's going back in February.

However, he did agree with you on one point. "FYI: what you see on TV isn't real." He said exactly that -- what you see on TV is not real. The media exaggerates things, and all you ever hear about are body counts. Do you hear about rebuilding schools or rebuilding bridges? How about any military successes? Of course not...

Should a woman be allowed in combat? Ofcourse they should. They can fight like anyone else. They can take a bullet like anyone else. Why not? We're all equal here. If the other side decides they're not going to shoot a woman then it'll make it an easier war to win too.
