Guys, the job only requires a high school diploma and two years experience. NO degree/certs/etc are required. That is why the pay is that low. It is for an assistant to help out. This guy just happens to have degrees, but they are not IT related. It's not my fault he didn't major in the field he wanted to work in.

If someone in this job shows potential, they can easily move up to a higher position.

Two years experience at a burger king in the lowest cost of living locations in the US and you're making 24k/year: that's without a high school diploma or the ability to talk good n' shit.

I suppose what I am saying is, someone who goes out and does IT work on their own out of their house comes across to me as someone who would have subpar experience to someone who worked corporate IT and has always had a boss/guidance/resources available to them.

We've been trying to hire an IT support assistant for the past month. Basically the job entails doing inventory in the IT department, setup new computers in offices, assisting with training staff on IT issues, and doing any software install/hardware upgrades. That's about it. The most difficult part of the job would probably be assisting with active directory accounts.

You cheap bastards. You deserve exactly the kind of riff raff you're getting. That's a mcdonalds entry level flip burger wage. Do you want mcdonalds entry level flip burger type people inventorying your IT assets and assisting with training staff?

Your pay is honestly fucking insulting. You're wasting people's time offering this job and not telling people up front the pay is essentially minimum wage. The wage should be about twice what you're offering, more if in an expensive area.

I know you personally didn't pick the pay scale, but if you're honest you should tell HR that they are never going to find a good person at that wage. Any person who even takes the job and doesn't suck will be looking elsewhere.

HR is wasting everybody's time with this wage, yours, the people interviewing, everything.

BTW, you should not hire the guy in the original post. Anybody with the experience he has willing to work for $10 is probably a serial killer, has horrendous interpersonal skills and/or criminal record (including tortures animals for fun), and/or is looking to loot your business and rob you blind. Get serious with the salary and stop being unrealistic about the position.

You still don't get it. You want to pay unskilled McJob wages which someone with no highschool degree can get walking in the door.

And you want to hire a skilled worker with 2 years of hands on experience for the same wage.

Are you a little slow when it comes to common sense? Like I can count to potato slow?

maybe the senior network job pays 12 an hour there.

I'd have taken that job a year ago. I don't care about money, and wanted to get into IT. You wouldn't have hired me since I don't have a bunch of paid for letters after my name.

Your loss, but probably not mine. I like computer work, but don't like corporate bullshit. I suspect the bullshit load at your place is larger than most judging by the complete lack of reality in the job description. You're not alone. I applied for similar positions at similar pay levels. I never got a call back, but I'm sure they found the people they deserved.
 
so i dont get it is he just somebody complaining about not getting hired/not liking the job requirements in a werid way or is he the guy hiring imaginary people with degrees and corporate experience on window washer salary.



if anyone is wondering at my internship at one of the big pc manufacturers in 2003 i made 17.50 an hour plus benefits. i was 17 and had just graduated highschool and had no corporate experience whatsoever
 
sounds like the silly CL job postings I see wanting a CCNA, VCP, MCSE with 7+ years exp and paying 50k. Maybe 5 years ago I'd see a bunch of postings like that, I assume the labor market has tightened enough but I'll still see this stuff just not a prevalent.

If it takes 2 years experience to be able to do that job, you need to pay a lot more. That's the reason you aren't getting a lot of apps. 2 years experience in any of the trades will easily get you $15/hr or more.

It could just be that the job market sucks where he's at. The guy took the initiative to get certifications and runs their own business, which they admit they did part time. Now, if they actually had a business license, that shows some initiative as well, because they did something to make it look like they had no gaps in employment. The corporate world is different from the home PC repair business, but it isn't that hard to learn.

In the end, if no company is willing to take on someone with little or no experience, the job market for entry level IT will dry up because no one who has many years of experience wants an entry level job unless they absolutely have to.

One thing I've seen companies do is have people go through a temp agency for the 90 days or so, then if they wanted to keep the person, they brought them on full time. It made it easy to get rid of someone you figured wasn't going to work out.
 
Well, because he is doing this "own IT business out of the house" thing, I don't have a boss to call and verify he's able to do the work. So, in other words, do I just hope that he's been doing it competently on his own all this time because he says he is?

The majority of Co,'s these days will offer little or no information about former employee's except stop/start dates. Too many lawsuits, and $10/hr? geez, that's kinda low for anyone reliable and competent.
 
Maybe the guy is a reliable and competent homeless man and desperately needs the work to buy reliable and competent drugs. If he's willing to take it and has a diploma and 2yrs experience then hell give that homeless man his job!
....btw, he probably lied about having both but who background checks $10/hr workers?

we haven't been getting many apps
had to screen out most of the few we are getting due to lacking the two years work experience.
one guy walked when he found out the pay.
other arrived late and acted like she was stoned.
I also don't want to be stuck with someone who is clueless

That said, you are paying much too little. Ten dollars an hour is less than cashiers at Costco make.

If I was him the moment you told me the pay I would have my eyes light up wide open and just slowly get up and exit. Seriously, for all his certs you're questioning if he is good enough for your shit paying IT job?

Hell I'd be tempted to send an invoice for my time after I walked out. For teh lulz. :awe:
