Should their be a public registry of Gun Owners?

Like we have a sex offender registry, what about a gun owner one. Anyone who owns a gun is registred along with their name and address. This way people can the area can know who does and doesn't own a gun, and who is a potential danger to the community. Seems fair enough, own a gun get on a public database.

I am sure I am not the only one who would like to know if any of my neighbors are harboring a gun or two or more.

I do not think this would be of any use. Guns are too easy to buy and hide. Having a public registry would create paperwork and hassle people.

The difference is that people don't choose to be dangerous by getting HIV, people choose to be dangerous by owning a weapon.

My gun has never been used to take a life. It has been used to save both life and property.

Explain to me exactly how my gun has made me a danger to society when it has been the exact opposite.

As I've brought up in previous threads (albeit more than 6 days), there's a place called Kennesaw Georgia that has a legal mandate that anyone who is able to own a gun must own a gun and keep ammo for it in the house. Population of ~30,000 IIRC. Surprise surprise, violent crime is low and robberies are all but unheard of.

Enduring generations of extended violence with a final result at the UK's already-higher-than-ours violent crime rate is a profoundly stupid idea.

I work here in Kennesaw. FWIW it is homeowners that are required to own a firearm. I rent, but regardless, I have a nice little arsenal of fun toys.

I've never heard of that law. Though I think all my friends who are homeowners who live in the area aren't actually in Kennesaw but in Marietta or further north like Cartersville or Acworth.

As far as this gun registry thing, I'd be against it. When someone purchases a gun they already have to go through a background check for many types of guns. I support making that background check better. But I'm also against a sex offender registry. First it's amazing the stupid things that can get you on it. Second I don't believe in continuing to punish someone who's served their time. Third I dislike how in the US we focus on punishment instead of rehabilitation. We imprison more people than anyone else and we have the highest recidivism rate.

As far as gun owners go, I think it's a bit insulting to liken them to registered sex offenders. As a gun owner hasn't committed a crime by buying a gun. And the simple act of owning a gun doesn't necessarily make them more dangerous. Sure, it means if they are dangerous the act of owning a gun makes them more lethal, but it doesn't increase their chance of being dangerous. A dangerous person can be dangerous with or without a gun. I support education for sellers of guns to notice suspect behavior and report suspicions if they have any, that would probably do more than any registry.

Op is troll but lol at HAL this thread

I think it's safe to say you have an obviously irrational phobia of guns, especially American guns. I believe you have frequent nightmares of a gun escaping an American house, crossing the ocean, breaking into your home at night and anal raping you and your dog before blasting your brains out. I really do!

:whiste:

How did you use it to save (x)?

There were several incidents during the aftermath of Katrina in which groups of bad guys, and one incident with a single bad guy, with obvious intent to cause harm and steal property (a lot of which was vital for survival and irreplaceable at the time) changed their minds once they saw/heard my shotgun.

A police officer told us that a group of people exactly matching our description killed a man and his wife a dozen blocks away or so. They weren't armed. Another poor bastard was forced to watch as his wife was raped by 3 men but at least they let them live. They weren't armed either.

This was a very common situation during that time. Thugs don't want to get into a shootout anymore than normal people do because they don't generally want to die anymore than normal people do. They are almost never willing to knowingly get into a gunfight if for no other reason than there are tons of potential targets out there that don't have the means to defend themselves. During that time, being visibly armed (preferably with a long gun because it is visible from a larger distance) almost guaranteed that you did not get messed with by the thugs. I haven't heard a single story about neighborhoods that worked together to put armed men at the entrances being looted or the people in those neighborhoods being harmed by criminals. Lots and lots of stories of murder, rape, looting, stealing food/water/gas (again, irreplaceable at the time), etc... in houses/neighborhoods/people that were not armed.

So again, tell me exactly how my gun is "dangerous" when it has done nothing but save property and life without EVER being fired at another human being.

This would explain why HAL is afraid of guns.

Finally, a picture of HAL's gun.

And the criminals would use this registry to know which houses they can rob without the fear of being shot.

Of course, the family of the dead burglar can then sue the home that was not registered as owning a gun.

Or, better yet - when a law is passed to provide a reason as to why you would want to review this registry, scream and yell how that question is an invasion of privacy.

And so on and so forth.

I think we all agree (except for maybe Anarchist420) that there must be some limits on the second amendment. No chemical, biological, or nuclear arms allowed. No howitzers or Abrams tanks allowed. Things like that come immediately to mind.

So the discussion over gun control legislation is not about having no limits to the second amendment, sane people already agree there needs to be limits there, but at what point the limit is placed.

Mostly because those aren't 'arms', they're ordinance.

Nice strawman. How do you use a deer to kill 20 people at your school?

Hal is an idiot, but so are you gun nuts. You guys use idiot arguments like "Why dont we have a database for knifes!?"

I've never seen a driveby done with a knife.

You don't need to make guns illegal to prevent school shootings because schools are already gun-free zones. School shootings are already impossible because it is illegal to bring a gun on to school grounds.

Foolish!

Guns are supported by Republicans who destroyed our economy. Therefore guns destroyed our economy. Therefore guns are dangerous and should be banned.

That is how your gun is dangerous. By owning it you are willingly participating in the destruction of this country.

The shit people come up with is amazing. I say we make a list of people who own computers while we are at it. They have the potential to spew stupid shit on the internet.

Why are you afraid of your neighbors?

Oh really?

I actually own that gun...the knife is cool looking but I prefer my light for night use...

On topic a registry is moronic and ill conceived, nobody has any reason to know if/how many/what guns I or any other citizen owns, period.
