why the fuck can't they discuss this shit in washington and have the debate too? the debate takes about 4 hours that's about it. this is a bullshit political stunt he's trying to pull

The debate can wait a few days or a week. Obama and McCain need to be in washington getting a bill passed. Also maybe they can pass a second bill that will fund a giant investigation so we can send some of these crooks to jail.

Hey, it's not like McCain has to show up. Obama wouldn't mind 90 minutes of free tv.

I can't imagine McCain not showing up if Obama would either way - the image of Obama standing next to an empty podium having 90 minutes to talk. Why would McCain would even risk that?

Maybe because the debate is not in DC. Maybe because McCain thinks a 700 billion dollar freaking bill is more important than a debate going off on a specific day. There is no reason the debate can't wait a few days. Not like Obama has not avoided debates since july when McCain offered him 10-14 of them.

I agree. In such a situation, the lack of McCain's presence will probably yield the floor to more informal questions and allow Obama to appear more 'genuine' by fielding questions that he knows his opponent will not be able to respond/reciprocate to until much later.

*imagines Obama sitting in the side of the stage with his legs hanging off, answering questiosn with a wireless mic in his hand*

That is not something I would think any opponent would like to deal with.

So surely you can tell me what McCain is going to be doing in the drafting of that bill? As I asked Double Trouble, if it's so important that he should be there, he must have some important work on the bill to do, right? Surely you can name some of it?

I can't believe this has to be explained, but not everyone in Washington is getting together to write this bill. The leadership and the conference committees get input from their party members, and they write the bill. McCain can give that input the same over the phone as he can there, because they probably won't even let him in the room where the bill is being written.

That's the funny thing, you guys bought his line about having to be in Washington for this, but you don't even know what he would do while he's there.

The AMERICAN people have a right to know what is going on. What a great podium for McSAME to tell the people what is going on. Once the debate is done, he can take his busted up face and head back down to DC.

quest, are you 72 years old? do you not know that they have something called airplanes, and even better, TELECONFERENCING?! theres technology that enables a person to have input even when they arent there. besides, you think all the senators are gonna huddle in a circle and come up with some huge plan?

i want mccain and obama to go 1v1 in a hardcore pvp. i demand this debate to happen as scheduled. im tired of this pandering bullshit.

John McCain needs a timeout for CRYING.

I hope McCain cancels. He'll hand Obama 90 minutes of free prime-time coverage while simultaneously turning himself into the biggest pussy in America.

That's really uncalled for and in poor taste IMO.

I don't know maybe because Obama and McCain are the damn heads of each party. Maybe if they work together they can much more input from both sides to get this done. They being the heads of the parties can cut through the party bullshit and get this done and done right. Also with both of them having a personal stake I guarentee the bill will be much better. They want to be leaders of this country. This is their chance to prove they have what it takes. Lead on this bill and be co-sponsors after it is drawn up. Hell Obama is a lawyer he can even write some of it. I would rather Obama/McCain lead this than the current bums who got us into this mess. Who ever wins this election will be affected by this bill and should be able to help shape it.

Is this how president Obama will act? Just let reid/pelosi make all the hard decisions?

Not only does McCain not have any official capacity to accomplish ANYTHING back in Washington wrt a bailout bill. He isn't on any committee, he isn't an ecnomics expert, and he has no influence with respect to those experts that have been working on this issue for weeks now.

He now has to prove that somehow any bailout bill is a direct result of his intervention

AND

he has to get Pelosi and Reid to cooperate and give him what he wants for a "bipartisan" bailout bill

AND

he has to face down GWB who...apparently, everyone forgot is the sitting POTUS in charge of this crisis and will probably be looking for credit if a bailout plan gets passed. DOnt forget, GWB has a legacy to try and turn around, and this is about the best shot he ever has had.

wow McCain...just wow. You fvcked yourself on this one.

I think the reference was meant to imply that McCain would lose the debate and heat to Washington "bruised and beaten." Hopefully it was not an attack on his existing scared face.

McCain and OBama can't do anything there in Washington that they cant do if they were both in Alaska.

Neither one of them are on banking committees

McCain is going to go to washington and watch the hearings on TV just like everyone else

They are not the heads of their parties, and they are not part of the conference committees. Cut through what 'party bullshit'? Pelosi and Boehner just put out a press release talking about how they are making progress in a bipartisan manner. Current bums that got us into this mess? What the hell does that even mean? Why would either Obama or McCain write any part of this? Neither one of them is particularly knowledgeable in economics. I have tons of friends who are lawyers, doesn't mean they would be any good at drafting a financial sector bill.

What your post showed me is that you have no clue what McCain will be doing in Washington. Your entire post was just empty platitudes and meaningless cliches. Obama is approaching this in a calm and adult manner, McCain is flailing. It's embarrassing and troubling what he's doing because he's showing he has no clue what's going on.

McCain has demonstrated in the last week that he has absolutely no idea what is going on with the economy.

"The fundamentals are strong", "we should fire the SEC chairman", blah blah blah.

I doubt his input is really that critical.

I suspect that McCain gets what he wants and they delay the debate till next week.

Perhaps Wed or Thursday, they'd get more viewers on a night other than Friday.

McCain should get in front of a podium and say:
"If Obama is so concerned about us debating then why did he turn down the chance to have weekly town hall debates during the summer?"

He could also re-challenge Obama to more town hall style debates before the election.

All McCain is going there to do is strut around in front of the cameras and maybe try to help forge a consensus. (something he could do from anywhere). When the bill finally does get passed, and it will be soon, you will see him try and jump on it to take credit.

Their past inaction makes any future rushes to action seem like a political tactic from the get go. IF they had been dealing with this extensively then they would deserve the lauding that they would [potentially] get.

As candidates they are somewhat restricted to telling tales of what they would do and extolling their character and virtues. Having been so disconnected from the legislative process is something expected and makes pandering stick out a sore thumb.*

*assuming that the media isn't hiding it😉

I dont think GWB will let him get away with that.

I wonder if McCain thought that far?

you think GWB cares anymore? he's looking at the clock in the oval office, tapping his pencil, and day dreaming while he waits till he can go back to playing cowboy and clearing brush.

yes I think he does.

Any lame duck President that has a chance to make history like GWB does now is going to care.

dont be so naive.

I think McCain should stop trying to delay the inevitable thrashing and just take it when it's currently scheduled.
