Can you give 1 valid example of food you shouldn't keep in your house?

My parents were some of the first baby boomers, born less than a year after the war ended. When they were kids, their parents would save bacon grease in a jar and use it as cooking oil. If you thought margarine and butter were bad, try cooking everything in bacon fat. Mysteriously, both of my parents were skinny (normal) looking children and the have lots of photos showing it.

i grew up in the same type of house. I also do the same now.

big issue i see is that we spent more time outdoors and playing. I also had a TV in my bedroom and intelavision with a bunch of games.

but if it was nice out we were outside.

its the same with my kids. if its nice out they are out. both of my kids are in sports (daughter in gymnastics+ karate, son in wrestling, baseball (well tball) and karate).

but as for cooking? bacon fat rules. but also for snacks we go through a LOT of fruit.

Some of the healthiest foods available are dirt cheap. Lentils, beans, brown rice, etc. This excuse that healthy food is expensive is a load of crap. Face it, most people who're seriously overweight are getting their food from carry-out places, fried chicken joins & fast food restaurants.

We don't eat that garbage because it tastes like fuck. I brought some rice to work as my lunch and the taste is so bland that I couldn't even eat it. My stomach hurts right now because my food is too horrible to eat. My lunch today was 1L of milk from the drug store downstairs.

Feeding your child unhealthy food, and/or not making them exercise is child abuse.

Saying that "healthy" food is expensive is a cop-out. Water is free. And a pair of fake Nikes are $20 at Payless Shoes. Can only afford hamburgers? Fine, walk at least 2 miles 5 days a week.

how does one "make" their kids exercise?

my parents did the whole "it's nice out, spend the day outside" thing too, but I'd just go hang out at a friend's house, go to the comic book store, take a nap, etc... if I was feeling particularly industrious, I'd leave, slip back inside through a side door, and hang out in the basement.

After schools dropped their physical education programs, I think that is when a lot of weight issues started. I am willing to bet that running track for 30 - 45 minutes in school PE class was all the exercise some kids got.

When I was in school (1970s - 1980s), PE was a required class all the way until your junior year in high school.

Today, kids get no PE. The kids sit in class all day long, then go home and sit in front of the TV, or computer.

Put PE back in school, and make those kids run track for 30 - 45 minutes everyday.

huh? since when is PE not required anymore?

Simple. Fines seem to be very en vogue right now, just remove the child tax deduction for obese children. You need to submit a signed document from your doctor certifying that your children are not fat (1099FAT?) in order to claim the deduction. Be as fat as you want and raise fat little fatties, but the rest of us don't have to subsidize your fatness.

I was never one for strenuous exercise in my younger days, but I definitely enjoyed Phys Ed. You can't beat spending 50 minutes of a school day playing street hockey, football, or volleyball.

In school I sucked at sitting still for the better part of the day and then being told to do a specific activity at a specific time in the approved way and then going back to sitting still - I HATED Phys Ed.

If i hadn't gotten to go home for lunch I would have died.

There's no one answer for this.

it ticks me off that schools are canceling phys ed. it helps kids mentally and physically. If i didn't have ways to blow off energy i didn't do well in school .
Do you guys still have recess?

Back in mah day we played football during the lunch hour. Ironically it was a lot safer than real football because none of us are wearing helmets or pads. Guys with helmets regularly crash into each other head first and cause major brain damage. That never happened to us because head on head collisions are extremely painful and we avoided it at all cost :D

schools are cutting what they can. PE, music and recess are the main ones on the chopping block.

do a google search there are a few articles on schools cutting or canceling PE.

If you are such a bad parent that you can't get your child to go on a walk with you or play a sport or be generally active, then you don't get to feed them crappy food.

You have to control either input or throughput/output.........if you can't control either, you don't need to be a parent. Children are too young to make proper food choices for themselves.

I would submit to this thread that generally people who are against such things probably have over-eating/lack of exercise habits themselves.

Making your child fat sets them up for a lifetime of ridicule, social anxiety, lack of relationships outside the "fat" clique, lack of self-confidence, health problems, and early death.

I am generally a libertarian, but the problem with this is that they go on SSDI and sit on their fat ass while we pay their tremendous medical bills. $$$$$

From what I remember, only the fat kids (and not even all of them) and the uncoordinated nerds didn't enjoy gym class. Time to get out of learning and getting to have fun while socializing? Win win.

I think obesity is a disease. It is the same as if you smoked in the house all the time and gave your kids lung cancer. You get heart disease and other bad stuff by being obese. Therefore the parents should lose their kid due to being bad parents. Reckless endangerment is the term I believe.

if you're talking about a toddler with coke in their sippy cup, sure.

but at a certain point, parents can't be held responsible for their children's free will.

I was a god damned obstinate child after the age of like 7-8... any attempts they made to get me to go for a walk with them or sign up for a sport was instantly perceived in my head as them being judgmental assholes and ending in a giant fight (making me even less likely to actually get out and do anything that could in any possible way make my parents happy).

its rather easy. you go out and do it with them. I have never seen a small kid not want to spend time with a parent (at least when younger).

get them used to playing a sport. get them out doing something.

you can't them to go out and then sit on your ass. it don't work that way.

And a 7-8 year old can't go through the Mcdonalds Drive-thru by themselves.

If you want to be a little shit and do nothing active? OK, but you are eating low-energy foods.

I have no recollection of gym before high school, but during high school I only participated when we did something I considered fun. I liked archery, and floor hockey, and tolerated basketball. Run a mile around a track? Nope. I'll walk it, and maybe jog part of it if I'm really motivated, but that's all you'll get. Aerobics? Yea, right :^D

I am totally mystified that someone enjoyed gym class.

Good for you, of course. Why can't you respect that some of us had a different experience - and maybe weren't fat kids or uncoordinated nerds?

I enjoyed a majority of the sports that we played in gym class, and the best part was... the kids had to play with me! :p There were some activities that I didn't enjoy as much such as weight lifting, aerobics, tennis (I enjoy playing now) and cross country (obligatory Back to the Future quote: "Run for fun?").

Kudos to you for having active kids. Fruit's a good food to have around, but it's good to keep veggies around too. Fruits are high in sugars and simple carbohydrates that aren't as good for you as the leafy green vegetables...but much better than a candy bar or something high in saturated/trans fats.

I really hope with packing lunches for my kids (when I have some), I can help keep them from gaining too much extra weight. I'm in better shape than my father was at my age, but I still have a long way to go from gaining extra weight. A huge percentage of folks these days are pre-diabetics and they don't even know it....and I'm not talking about the extreme cases eitehr....just people who eat the average american diet and drink a few beers/week. It's depressing to see what a few years of that diet will do if you don't counter it with exercise and fiber. :D

Sadly, in the case of most of the obsese people it's:

  • play Xbox
  • play playstation
  • watch TV
Putting televisions and these games into children's bedrooms is a huge contributing factor to childhood obesity. I'd bet there's a very strong correlation between the percentage of bedrooms with televisions and the percentage of children who are overweight.

So what if they are anorexic? You gonna pull the kids then too?

I had a relative of my wife's that was so bad they had to hospitalize her and she had gum disease and lost teeth. One extreme can be just as bad as the other.

Lots of people have alergies, hay fever, allergic to grass, etc and are better off staying indoors. The methods used to treat overweight people are not very good at this point. Many people can not process nutrients properly.

Don't blame this on the lack of PE. I get literally no exercise at all and I'm still only 140lbs.

Here's my day from start to finish
wake up at 6:30am
eat 2 pieces of toast with peanut butter and drink chocolate milk
get on bus at 7:15am, fall asleep on bus
get to work at 8:00am
sit on my ass, draw things, read email, post on forums for a few hours
lunch consists of a piece of cheese, potato chips, and oolong tea with no sugar
sit on my ass more, draw more things, whatever
leave work at 4:30 and arrive home between 5:30-6:00pm
play video games for a bit
make some a shitty meal like pasta with cheese wiz or beans on toast
play more video games
go to bed

That's every single work day right there. At least the kids in school need to walk to different classes. Here I'm sitting for many hours at a time without standing.
