Should Nintendo abandon the hardware market?

Almost none of Nintendo's software titles, which is where the profit lies, are reaching their sales potential because they're all, of course, for the Nintendo Gamecube.

Considering Nintendo's obvious image problem, their inability to market better than Sony or Microsoft, and the common knowledge the market can only support two major players, should Nintendo choose to simply become a third party developer.

If so, do you think Nintendo will be more profitable as a third party developer?

If Nintendo sticks to a solid business model and isn't losing money they should be fine. Some may dispute this, but I really do think that Microsoft is losing money on the XBox and they continue to put on a good face about it, but that can't be good for them. Nintendo crushes everyone with the Gameboy and Sony's new handeld can't possibly be making money with a $199 price.

I've gotta say, there has been a huge lack of quality cube titles... I can only think of one that is a real *must have* this holiday season (Metroid Prime 2). The only reason I keep my cube around is the possibility of Zelda. I havent played it in months.

Nintendo makes money hand over fist in the handheld market and they might not be making as much in the console market as they do in the handheld but I think they are still turning a nice sized profit. Of course I might be biased though, check the screen name 🙂

You do realize that MS sells almost as many GCs as MS does Xboxes in the US, and although they slump in Europe, they outsell the Xbox by about 20:1 (5000 units/week vs. 250) in Japan. This doesn't take into account the GBA sales, which often make the PS2 look week. In Japan alone, Nintendo has sold over 2 million GBA SPs, half a million GCs, and even almost 200,000 GBA (non-SP) in the last 10 months. And Nintendo almost always turns a profit on the hardware. Nintendo's the one of the three companies that's been posting the highest profit.

So why exactly do they want to leave?

Do you mean NINTENDO sells as many GCs as MS does Xboxes in the US???

And no, I don't think nintendo should quit the hardware market...

They may make money in handheld hardware.

However, this christmas how many copies will Halo 2 sell?

How many will the second GC Metroid sell?

Why?

Installed base.

Nintendo may be turning a profit, but they'd turn a larger one if their games were made for the more popular systems.

You know, I find it odd the number of people that see two companies, one making a tidy profit, and one losing a billion dollars per year, and people say the one making the profit is doing badly.

because at $99 with 2 controllers and a game, they arent making money on the console.

And most of the games suck.

No they don't.
The ratio of good:crappy is much better on Gamecube than Xbox or PS2.

Oh that's true. I got about twice as many games for the PS2 than the GC only because of the fact that I spent about $150 on "shotgun gaming" where I bought about 20 games in the hopes that some were good. There was a few worth playing (ie: iNinja, MoH:Rising Sun, and a few others). But when I traded in 5 games+my old PS2 for a PSTwo, I didn't have any problem finding 5 games that I wouldn't miss, and three "alternates" in case they wouldn't take one of the 5. And my brother in law has two of my PS2 games because I just didn't like them. (Test Drive wasn't even suitable for pooping on). With my GC, there's only one or two games that I wouldn't miss.

No, they should not quit the market. Nintendo is still a great brand and I would not hesitate to buy any of their systems for my children.

GameBoy's domination in the portable market makes Sony's console domination look like a joke. But obviously you make higher profits with console software than you do portable, but its still an achievement you don't laugh at.

Considering that Nintendo has games OTHER than Halo that are good, Halo 2 will easily sell more than then new Metriod, well at least in America where XBox might be more popular than GameCube but that doesn't translate into overall sales where the rest of the world seems to support Nintendo more than XBox. XBox is still very much an American console.

Yeah, you seem to be assuming that XBox's American popularity translates to the rest of the world which is not true. Last I knew GameCube was comfortably ahead of XBox and in terms of software sales Nintendo was actually experience a growth of sales larger than Sony.

Never count Nintendo out, they have far too many franchise titles whereas Microsoft has only Halo, maybe DOA... Heck, I wouldn't be suprised if Nintendo's new Zelda05 game actually bests Halo 2's pre-release/opening day records, and that's considering the fact that Halo/Halo2 are some of the only games you might want an XBox for.

Can't think of a game at all that appeals to me personally on the XBOX but a good bit does for the Gamecube.....hence I bought one.

I thought Nintendo said that of they leave the console market, they will leave it completely (no console would = no more games).....
