Further, the Irish emigrate all over the place, so why is it not possible that the Irish love of fried potatoes did not influence the inclusion of such in a rather traditional Greek dish prior to the advent of McD's?

I lived in Greece for a little more than 6 months in the late 70s, and back then there were no French Fries in the gyros anywher, plus, I can tell you that there is about 0% Irish influence or Irish people in the entire fucking country, that's why.

Don't take my word for it, how about you take the word of another poster who's actually spent a lot of time in Greece over Ns1:

see above for pictures of fries in gyros in Athens.

:colbert:
I've been to Greece over 100 times. Definitely not authentic. :colbert:

Here ya go
, from Themistocles Chronis, yet another person who's actually spent time in Greece and actually knows:

Speaking of the “Westernization” of Greek culture, the gyro and souvlaki have been disturbingly affected by the same phenomena that has led to techno beats in our music, English words replacing perfectly good and more descriptive Greek words in our vocabulary, and to islands like Mykonos resembling the stores of Tyson's Corner mall. The last time we were in Greece we started noticing that even the most traditional mom-and-pop gyro and souvlaki stands were starting to put the oddest thing in the middle of the sandwich… French fries. What the heck is that? It was like someone decided to take all the makings of a gyro or souvlaki platter and cram them into a sandwich. It’s like when you go to Wrapworks or any other “hip” wrap place and find rice or mashed potatoes being thrown into a tortilla along with the meat and traditional sandwich vegetables, or when you see people putting potato chips on an Italian Hero sandwich. The McDLT effect of hot meat in a cool bed of lettuce, tomato, onion and tzatziki is absolutely ruined by throwing in hot oily French fries into the mix. Not only does the sandwich suffer, but think about the French fries themselves, virtually becoming patates sto fourno, in the steamy envelope of a pita sandwich. It got to the point where we just started asking for the French fries on the side.

See? I can google, too! :D

All the Gyro talk has made the wife want one even, she was going to the little Greek place and pick up a couple and a salad in a bit.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I still love their pork Souvlaki also.

Might get one of each.

The squid even looks interesting, have never tried theirs.

Kalamarakia, I always liked Calamari and never tried theirs.

The wife won't eat it, I even get a plate at various places sometimes and just eat it myself as an entree.

Think I'm going with a Souvlaki though.

thanks for re-affirming my earlier statements, I was tired of doing all the googling myself.

:D

You know, I was the one who came up with "No Lifer" for 50,000 posts, and it's not in the forum software, so, if you're bucking for it, better stay on my good side or I might "forget" to change your title entirely, or perhaps worse, commit a typo and dub you a "No Wifer." ;)

I used to make a tasty but simple salad dressing the consisted solely of tahini, tamari (soy sauce) and some water for the right consistency, all blended together.

That's brilliant; I've made dressings like that using toasted sesame oil, but I think the tahini would be better.

Some of the Doner stands in Berlin will ask if you want fries; they also put them inside the sandwich. We found it to be an unpleasant surprise.

it's hilarious how many people the OP inspired to get gyros.

It's pretty common for us to begin with.

The pork chunks in this Souvlaki are pretty massive.

I didn't even touch the salad myself, might pass out in a few minutes :p

I'm thinking there will be left over gyro I can snag tomorrow.

We have a Gyro Express at the mall's food court (~7 min from where we live) since about two years ago. It's delicious.

I always had gyros in the plate though, with rice, etc.

I've never tried the Gyro Platter at the local place myself, but the wife says is more or less like that.

I didn't google anything. I was merely speculating based on acquired knowledge in other areas.

I haven't been to Greece, but I had been all over those other countries, including living in Italy and Switzerland about 6 months.

That google comment wasn't directed at you. :D

I was in a hot and heavy nef war with my new nemesis, Ns1. He's closing in on the big 50,000, so he had me outgunned. :p

He gets that way when he's jonesing for some bull dick.

It's interesting, though, because I had never thought about that. I like cuisine evolution.

I've seen fried potatoes pop up in strange places before, mixed with dishes where one might assume they shouldn't exist, and I could never attribute it to shitty American culture. So I was wondering if that would be the same in other regions.

i can't wait to go to Cyprus this summer and get some of the gyros there. oh man. and the souvlaki. everything is better than here, such a small island that the produce was probably picked that morning and it packs the flavor.
