Should I sell my AMD64 and Mobo for a better one?

I just ordered a AMD64 +3200 (Newcastle), Asus K8V Deluxe, Thermaltake Venus 7 HSF, Farcry, and AMD64 T-shirt for 179.99, (203 after shipping and taxes).

But I kinda want a socket 939. So what should I do? Is the difference between Socket 939 and 754 that much different?

And what are the other benifits to S939 besides Dual-Channel memory?

Edit: Oh and if I were to sell these, how much would I be expecting?

the board goes for around 90ish and the chip goes for about 205 retail. so, i'm guessing you could get about 250-260 for it, most people who wanted that combo got it, and those people trying to sell these sets are in mass quantity, so they're not hard to find for a decent price. has your set come in yet? (shipped?) alot of people got theirs cancelled if they ordered late.

to answer your ?, the 939 is the going to be the new stanard. amd is discontinuing the 754 and 940 chipsets.

right now, they produce about a 15% gain, but i'm sure as the chipset matures, it'll provide even better performance. just give it time ;)

God, I hate this. I want a computer that will hold me for like at least 3 years before I have to upgrade to play a frickin' game or want to do something power intesive. But if it's gonna be dated in a couple month's it doesn't seem to be worth it.

Umm, even socket A won't be gone in the next 2 months.

Socket 754 will be around for another year at least. Also, they aren't killing off socket 940, its their server socket.

That will never happen. There will be a game released a year or max of two years from now that your PC won't be to handle very well.

the difference from a 3400+ and a 3500+ is not that large... i would say about a 3% advantage for the 3500+ (based off anand's result).

I would hold on to what you have and wait till the 90nm revisions come out (those are suppose to offer more gains than the current 939)... and the second gen 939 mobos.

Just ask all the people scrambling to play Doom3 at a decent level. The for sale forums are overflowing with people selling their 9700 and 9800 pros, and a ton of other cards that are less than one year old.

yeah, i played doom3 on my machine - it was like, "no". i guess i'm used to better performance. btw, it's scary as hell.

i'll give you 255 for it if you want to get rid of it. you can even keep farcry. :)

That's because they want to play it maximum settings and such. I just want a system that will be able to play it at decent settings. At playable speeds. I'm sure 9800Pro and 9700pro will be able to do both for games for awhile. Also both the 9800pro and 9700pro are older than a year and are still running pretty darn decent.

agreed - i have a 9800pro, and i can tell it's my processor that's not cutting it anymore.

anyways, if you choose to go 939, you have a buyer interested. :) for the right price of course! ;)

I'm seriously thinking about it. But the thing is I haven't got a confirm if I got in yet. Sorry for misinforming anybody. But my friend JUST got his, and we both registered and did it at the same exact time. The question is why didn't I get a confirm. I'm not that worried. Cuz this means I have to get teh 939. :D

I tried ordering this last week, and tigerdirect (who appear to be handling fulfillment for this deal) says it was cancelled. I don't think they are filling these orders anymore.

haha, of course. let me know if you get it, i'll buy it off you - you can make some quick cash for the 939 if that's what you want.

you can call and ask if it has been shipped :) let me know, because i plan on ordering ASAP. i have a 3200+ rig all planned out that i was going to buy in the next day. :) but i'll wait if you want to sell it and it'll save me a few bucks, i need every dime. out of state tuition kills me. :(

Well TD was cancelling random people. But my buddy did get his tracking no. So you probably had bad luck, and as it seems so do I.

Pinchy, I'll get back to you by monday night. And we'll talk about it.

Why not just keep that for now? For the cost difference of Selling this and going 939, you could easily use this setup then go 939 later without the need to even sell what you have now. The 3200+ is going to be fine for 18ish months(and there will be faster CPUs you'll be to upgrade to in that mobo), the only possible downside being that that Motherboard has an AGP slot and may be difficult to upgrade video in 12-18 months.

So keep what you have, IMO.

from thelooks of it though, PCI-E doesn't look as hot as it was once hyped up to be. i dunno, just a thought.

also, the 754 won't be around in 3 years.

sounds like he wants to build one that'll last him a while - for futureproofness, 939 would be ideal RIGHT NOW. in a year, it might be a different story, but who knows.

You hit it on the dime, and also I also have a bad habit of wanting the NEAR latest and greatest. I never want to jump on the latest and greatest however dunno why.

That is true, however sometime in the future it will be the only way to add decent Video to your system.
