(shipped?) alot of people got theirs cancelled if they ordered late.

to answer your ?, the 939 is the going to be the new stanard. amd is discontinuing the 754 and 940 chipsets.

right now, they produce about a 15% gain, but i'm sure as the chipset matures, it'll provide even better performance. just give it time ;)

Am I the only one who noticed this!

Socket 940 is AMD's SERVER line. It is NOT being discontinuted (WHY does everyone say it is >< ) and Opertons will CONTINOUSLY come out for it.

Why not get a 754 right now? IF you upgrade in 3 years or whatever you are getting new stuff what does it matter what you get now interms of upgradeability. If you are the type who is constantly playing with new parts ect then I don't see why 754 would be bad at all.

also, the 754 won't be around in 3 years.

sounds like he wants to build one that'll last him a while - for futureproofness, 939 would be ideal RIGHT NOW. in a year, it might be a different story, but who knows.

You hit it on the dime, and also I also have a bad habit of wanting the NEAR latest and greatest. I never want to jump on the latest and greatest however dunno why.

That's true as well. However the 3200+ you have now will serve you well for quite some time before you'll need to Upgrade. At that time the money you save now will buy you a decent CPU upgrade and a new Mobo.

Ultimately it's your choice, but I think holding off replacing that setup makes more sense.

then get the best bang for the bug.

Every (!!!!) HW will be outdated in a few months....and there is no pont i getting the ultra-elite system for $4000 if you can get 5% less performance for $3000 LESS or so. Between a really nice system and a ultra expensive system often the performance gap is very neglectible. (IMHO).

You wont see any real life difference between going for expensive Socket 939 AMD and a 754. ANd as for my part (right now) i am not willing to pay a premium for 939 if the performance is almost the same.

cool cool. just LMK asap. btw, doom 3 is really scary. no joke.

i'm aching for a computer to play doom 3 the way it was meant to be played, so i can scare the crap out of myself some more.

here's a thought - if you get a 939, and wanted a faster processor in the long run, you may not have to get a new mobo and that kinda thing, which would be the case with the 754 line. either way though, i'm too poor for the better stuff. haha.

I don't like playing with new parts constantly. I like getting something that's gonna last me a LONG time then upgrade all at once when the next time PC's completly evolve.

 hmm I should really read what I write lol.

Thats not what I meant at all ha. I should have said I think that 754 is fine because if you are going to be leaving the system alone then you don't have to worry about its upgrade ability. You won't be getting the latest processors or switching to PCI-Express or DDR-II so why worry about it. Your next system in 3 years down the road will have all that stuff or better. 939 has a huge mark up on it right now and barely performs better than the 754 stuff. If you can manage to wait for the 90nm 939's then I could understand though that will also have high markup while it may be worth a bit more its still alot more money.

I actually did get that same combo as you and did sell the mobo atleast cause I wanted a NF3 250 which I am loving btw.

Pinchy, it seems that they are not gonna sell it to me, but I wish they'd send me an email or something to tell me if it was cancelled or not.

dang, that's a shame, for you and me. what are you looking into now?

i'm in the same boat, but cannot spend the money for a 939 right now. tuition bites! i'm thinking an a64 3200+/chaintech vnf3-250/gig of corsair pc3200...comes out to be about 450.

I'm planning on the +3500 S939. But I'm gonna wait a max of two weeks to let it evolve cuz right now there seems to be a lack of S939 mobos. I might jump on the 6800GT too. I have two cases in mind. The new Thermaltake Tsnumai and One of the original ones. But that's for another thread. I wish someone would reply to my PSU thread.
