should I report this guy?

There's a guy here on campus that's selling bootleg software.
AutoCAD 2002 for $20
Matlab 6 release 12 for $30
Norton Antivirus 2002 $20
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 platinum $30
Windows XP Professional $30
Office XP Professional $30

I know these are bootleg because I emailed him a while back asking about it.
What do you guys think I should do?

Leave him alone. Don't be that guy that everyone hates. There are much worse things that he could be doing. Unless he is using the money to buy drugs and then sell them leave him alone.

Rock him. I don't mind people pirating software that much compared to people who _sell_ pirated software. If you get it for free, distribute it for free too. It's like selling promo CDs.

Yeah I don't know why but I don't like this. I have used plenty of pirated software "in the past" but stealing something from somebody and selling it is downright rude. He should be giving it away or not, but charging for it is not cool at all.

Quite a boatload of rationalizations here.

Should you not do what is right because someone else might not like it?

<< There are much worse things that he could be doing. >>

If someone keyed your car, punched your gf, or stole your wallet, would you accept this excuse?

<< Unless he is using the money to buy drugs and then sell them leave him alone. >>

Why would it matter what the reason is?

If you want to do the right thing, why waste your time on little battles.
Feed the hungry. Stop war. Fight political corruption.
When you're done with that, you can call the cops on people who make illegal left turns.

<< autoCAD 2002 license run about 3000 bucks each... i'm sure Autodesk would appreicate it. >>

Autodesk pursues pirated software with both hands swinging, if anybody cared, it would be them.

IMO, leave them alone, they will get whats coming to them later. It is called Karma-geddon.

How did you find out about it?
There might be a reason behind what he is doing, well more then what it seems.

But if you feel you should then go ahead, I am sure if a lot of people know, then he will get reported sooner or later anyway.

no.

i agree with 911paramedic... he'll get what's coming to him. you really shouldn't get involved for something this petty. btw, that's a bad price for NAV... i got my legit version of system works for 14 bucks.

Yes, just send an anonymous email. That's where the $500,000 fines and 10 years in jail come into play. For those of you who think xchangx should be off doing something more productive should look at the situation a bit better. If someone robbed your house and took your stereo and the next day you saw someone on a street corner selling your stereo, would you report it? or go try to cure some diseases and fight world hunger? Just because it's not your stuff that's being stolen and resold doesn't mean that it's not wrong and shouldn't be reported. Piracy is a major reason why prices for software is so high.

why waste time? because the guys a total jack@ss for selling it so blatently. just turn in evidence to school admin, they'll take it from there. its rather low effort really.

copying is one thing.

selling someone elses work for profit is deplorable😛

especially by a college student.

mind your own business, that's part of being an adult.

i love that attitude. if you hear your neighbor wailing on his wife.. i guess you should "mind your own business". idiot...

I agree. Turn in some evidence and the school will definitely take care of it. If they neglect to, then directly turn him in.

yes... i agree with the argument that "copying is one thing, selling a copy is worse" (selective prejudice argument)

also, because if you can't benefit from selling pirated software youself, no one else should be able to. (jealousy argument)

or perhaps you don't like him. (the jerk argument)

You mean, he's going to get run over by a maniac in a sportscar?

It's your conscience and your call.

If he is selling WinXP, he is going to get some pretty dissatisfied customers come activation time. 😉

Stealing from an individual vs stealing from a company: Isn't this similar to trolling over at the For Sale/Trade board. Don't dare troll someone over there otherwise you will have a possy on your hands (I never read just MYOB to those wanting to help the victim). But selling pirated software - Hell, the big companies deserve it, they make enough money, right?!?

When it comes down to it, isn't this guy stealing and selling other's copyrighted material? If you were a programmer and trying to make a buck, would you ignore people stealing and then reselling your product?
