should I report this guy?

Report him. Then post a link to the article on him in the school paper.

On a side note, he might be selling an open licenced copy of XP which means that he won't have to activate it.

LOL at all the "it's OK to distribute but horribly nasty to sell" comments. Like the $10-$30 bucks this guy is pocketing ever compares to the $3000 for some of those titles.

Cause everyone knows no one on these boards ever used warez.

<< It's your conscience and your call.

If he is selling WinXP, he is going to get some pretty dissatisfied customers come activation time. 😉
>>

WinXP Pro devils0wn and WinXP Pro Corporate Edition both don't require activation. 🙂

There's versions of Office XP w/ Frontpage that are the same way -- no activation required.

😀

excuse me if Im wrong, but wouldnt informing all these companies bring like a MASS AUDIT to your campus? I mean jesus imagine what would happen if they wanted to check everyone's systems... I know its a violatio of rights, but Im sure they'd find a legit way of doing it...

What about if you see someone jaywalking? or speeding? or running a stop sign? Or you going to call the cops on them too? The point is there are things crimes that aren't worth wasting time on. Let law enforcement handle it, if its so blatant like the guy said, he'll be shutdown eventually.

<< why waste time? because the guys a total jack@ss for selling it so blatently. just turn in evidence to school admin, they'll take it from there. its rather low effort really. >>

post his contact informztion here...like his email addy and his addy to send the money....errr.. to the law enforcement agencies..

I would say to myob though. Is he hurting anyone, no..

and no he isn't hurting MS, because college students have no money to purchase legit software.. this is why they have student editions and why pirating(borrowing) is so widespread at the university level

<< Is he hurting anyone, no.. >>

Is he hurting anyone? YES! He's hurting everyone who invested in making a valuable piece of the intellectual property. It is theft, pure and simple. :|

Not only that, he isn't doing it just for the benefit of a couple of a couple of poor student friends; he's selling them for his own profit. Bust him! :disgust:

Maybe you should get to know him first...there could be a reason he's breaking the law.

What if he's a minority or gay or otherwise oppressed?

Then I'm sure you'd feel pretty silly about turning him in. After all, the government's what made him do it anyhow.

😉

Man, that guy is a moron. He will get busted if you squeal or not. I give him abotu a month either way, then he will get tossed.

Not that I never used Pirated stuff, but I never sold / distrubuted it. that is just sad. AS others have said, just let him have the rope. He will get more than enough to hang himslef with.

Uh... this is a pretty stupid comment. The point is not that we do/don't use warez. The point is that we don't SELL them. $3k for software is what some companies have to charge, who are you to say what is too expensive for software to cost. LAME-O.

Let the first one without sin cast the first stone. If you arn't sitting on an assload of warez on your PC then go ahead and report him guilt free, otherwise you are a hypocrit. Hypocrits are the worst.

The real witty and intelligent person would get him to stop before he gets caught (teach him a lesson without ruining his college career). A simple way would be to leave an anonymous note in his mailbox saying that if he doesn't stop selling pirated software he might end up in prison.

If you use legal and registered software, hell yeah - go bust his butt. People like him raise the cost of software (probably by a miniscule amount, but it's about the principle, not the amount of money).

I thought this was funny:

<< mind your own business, that's part of being an adult. >>

LOL - Where did you get that one from? Are you an adult? I sure hope not.

I say report his ass.

Also, some companies, Like Newtek give a reward for info that leads to the arrest and conviction of someone who is doing things like that. I turned in some guy at first sat that was selling stolen copies of lightwave. The gave me a Copy of Lightwave 6, Aura 1.0, and some shirts.

<< just turn in evidence to school admin, they'll take it from there. its rather low effort really. >>

The only thing the school can do is stop him from selling on campus. The only people who can press charges are the original copyright holders of that software.

<< Quite a boatload of rationalizations here.

<< Don't be that guy that everyone hates. >>

Should you not do what is right because someone else might not like it?

<< There are much worse things that he could be doing. >>

If someone keyed your car, punched your gf, or stole your wallet, would you accept this excuse?

<< Unless he is using the money to buy drugs and then sell them leave him alone. >>

Why would it matter what the reason is?
>>

Let me elaborate....

If he is not harming YOU, leave him alone, if he is selling YOUR software, then report him, if he keyed your car, report him, if he punched your g/f, report him, if he is not doing anything that directly affects you, stay out of it, now just to cut off you people out there with no common sense, this rule does not apply to things of a heightened level of severity.
Example, if he's inflicting harm on others or something of that nature, THEN you can say something.

But just keep your mouth shut, there is no reason for you to get involved, you stopped being hall-monitor awhile ago (I hope).

I agree completely with you. Finally, someone with some common sense. 😛

Just mind your own business, dude! Does it have anything to do with you? NO! Is it affecting you directly? NO! So piss off! Are you in law enforcement? Sheesh..

Report him provided you can come up with the original cd's of every piece of software that you have installed on your machine that is not freeware or shareware, up to an including any mp3...

If not you are a hypocrite...

But it does affect other people. If this dumbass wasn't selling pirated software, and just 20% of the people paid for legitimate software (assuming 80% do without) that's better cash flow for the legitimate authors, which potentially allows them to ask for less money per legitimate copy.

Exactly. Only report him if your machine is clean.

<< Let me get Matlab from him, then report him >>

Bwah! 😉

Could blackmail him. $5000 or you go to the Feds. Heh.

Seriously though, Turn the knob in via email, letter, phonecall or whatever.
