Should I replace my RT314 w/ a switch now that I have a server

tm37

I have a small home network (2 comps, may add the third, 4th to follow in June[mil moving in]) Sharing a DSL connection with a RT314 router. I got myself a HP 667 Celeron Mini tower that I have loaded Clark Connect Gateway software. My idea here was to put all the swap files (music, jokes, driver d/l's) on one system (i currently have a small drive on the wifes comp that is shared). All I would be using this space would be just a place to store things.

After getting Clark connect up and running, I was able to get the ip from the DSL ISP but I couldn't get the router to see the server. I tried disabling DNS to no avail. Also I want to eliminate the firewall portion of the router and go strictly with the Clark connect (linux) firewall DNS.

Would a switch better serve me for this. One of the downfalls of the CLark Connect is you have to access it through another computer using a webbased interface (which would be great if I could).

Is there any way to make my router act JUST like a switch without all the IP issues OR Should I just go spend the 50 bucks?

thanks in advance.

HUB < Switch < Router

A switch is just a smart HUB. A router is just a more direct switch. Now-days the lines get very fuzzy check the link below.

I dont know what a rt314 is but you said it is router/firewall and I am gonna assume from the model # that it has 4 lan ports
and prolly 1 wan port.
I have a dlink router d704 I am able to everything you are asking with it. I have a linux server and 2 comps connected full time and I occasionaly connect my lappy up.
I think if you lose the clark connect gateway. the router should be able to do everything you want it to do.. I would suggest
a quick study of the manual for router and you should be golden
Or your router is subpar stuff. and you will have to figure a work around good luck!

If your network comps are Windows-based, then try using Netbeui as the protocal for file/printer sharing and disable file and printer sharing on your tcp/ip protocals. There are many documented info on the web on how to do this. Your RT314 is basically a 4 port 100mps switch plus a nat router. I would just plug everything into it and use it to share your DSL connection and serverup shares on your server comp (with password protection of course). Have fun!

Remember though with the NetBUI to set passwords. It can't be emphasized enough! Thor is right on. If you don't want passwords create users in the W2K box and let that be the server. Port 135-139 is NetBUI ports and if those are exposed w/o a password the entire world can access them, so be very VERY careful how you set up your firewall. I am just a single user and my router blocks about 4-5 attempts a day.
