So I stop by McDonalds on the way to work for breakfast. I see this older man walk out with just a cup of coffee. He's driving a pretty new Pontiac Vibe, so I assume he wanted to keep it clean inside. He gets in and before he shuts the door he drops an older cup of coffee on the ground.

Now I realize a cup isn't the end of the world, but it's not like it accidentally fell/blew out of his vehicle. Immediately I wanted to take a cup of coffee and toss it in his car to prove a point but I decided to get out and ask him WTF was his problem but as I approached his car I decided maybe it wasn't such a good idea. Anyway seeing people litter like that infuriates me for some reason. I realize he's going to die soon so he probably doesn't gif a faq about what he leaves for the rest of us to have to pick up.

My question is should I have said someting? What should I have done/what would you do?
 
Meh. It's probably not worth the trouble. If you were within distance of saying something already, then yes, but going out of your way and risking making a big problem probably wouldn't have been worth it.
 
There's a bus stop outside our old building. I walked out for lunch one day and saw an incredibly fat woman, presumably waitiing for the bus based on where she was standing, take the last bite of a candy bar and drop the wrapper in a single motion, timed perfectly that I was right in front of her as it fell. The kicker is - there was a trash can RIGHT NEXT to her. She wouldn't have had to take a single step to put it in the trash. In a single motion as I walked past her I bent down, picked it up, stood back up, glared at her while I threw it in the trash and never broke stride.

Cliffs: I saw someone litter and I threw it away while shooting a dirty look.

Probably something simple like, "dude you might wanna get out and throw this away next time, the world isn't your personal trash can" then pick it up and throw it away.

LOL that's probably about right. Thing is i'm not so concerned for the environment as I am for whoever has to pick that up, and the obviously laziness of his actions
 
I thought every place had laws about littering. Take down his license plate and report to police. If law doesn't apply to private property, I hate littering so much I'd consider lying and say he threw it on the road front of McD's.

in similar circumstances

I've gone over picked up the trash and put it a trashcan myself.

and one time I picked up the trash, followed them home, and threw it in their yard.

 
No, don't say anything. If he is littering, he probably knows it, and you saying something to him won't make him change his ways. He'll probably just laugh/smirk and go about his business and he wouldn't think anymore of you 5-10 minutes down the road.

So why waste your energy on them? Its best to just shoot people of that nature, but thats illegal.
 
I do it, but when I do it, I do feel kind of dirty and shameful, but that lasts for about 15 seconds.

Someone approaching me with regards to my littering really wouldnt affect my decision

I was driving back from work yesterday and this lady in front of me throws a whole fast food bag of garbage out the window. That totally pissed me off but there was nothing I could do. Behind both my seats in my car are multiple cans of redbull and bottles of water that I put back there so I don't have to litter. Granted it makes my car a little messy, but I clean it out once it gets bad, better than throwing it on the street.
 
I've gone through a few phases of littering.
First, I went with the masses and thought littering was the worst thing in the world.
Then, I heard a very interesting theory(and true in my opinion) that the city is pretty much trash anyway and throwing trash on trash isn't bad.
Now, I don't litter because I like my city to be clean as I imagine most others do.
