$20 an hour is a fair amount of money here in Ohio, and a lot of money for a college guy. Job FTW!

E3, $20 may seem like a lot in the short term, but in reality it pales in comparison to a fun experience you will likely remember for years to come and look back on fondly. I would never recomend turning down 'an adventure' unless it was for a sum that could really change your life.

Take the job but tell them before you start that you have a prior commitment. You don't have to tell them what you are doing or with who all you need to give them is the dates you will not be able to work. If they are not cool about you taking time off then that's probably a good indicator that the job will be crappy.

Even though E3 is quite an enjoyable experience, I say take the job.

Really? A lot of smaller companies randomly hand out invites to people walking by. :p

The right choice!

However, 20$ an hour isn't peanuts for an undergrad. Some college grads would be happy to make that much! (around 41K a year).

Take the job and then ask for time off. If he won't give you the time off, tell him you'll work for $10 an hour for the week after you come back from E3.

Enlighten us to where could a student obtain summer employment that pays more than 20/hr?

I don't think he put a lot of thought into that post. It was a thinly veiled attempt at bragging, but no one is impressed.

No, but obviously, the OP doesn't really need the job, or else he wouldn't even be asking this question....

Apparantly he does need the job, since he's hoping he can find a job that pays decently when he gets back from E3. He's a college student, of course he needs a summer job.

So....which is more important? E3, or the job? THAT is my point. $20/hr isn't THAT great, but yes, much better than minimum wage. Sounds like it's time to make that adult type of decision...work, or play? Each has it's benefits, and it's drawbacks...

If you are dumb enough to want a weekend gawking at video games against having a damn good paying job for a few months that will help you pay for staying alive, then you probably shouldn't be going to college.

Dude, if you REALLY wanna go to E3, do that. You got anywhere between 30-50 years of ass-slogging in the corporate world anyways. Be a slacker and have a blast at E3. Forget all the middle-aged self-righteous people who think you are too stupid to be in college for asking this question. And if you really need the money, don't pass up a chance to make $20 an hour - popular opinion has it that offers like that don't come along all the time for students.

Sure as hell hope you can do both! Best of Luck!

I would tell your employer that you have plans and see if you can get the week off. If not, I would choose the job if I were you. Getting a $20/hour job as a student is a real killer opportunity. Hell that is more than I made right after I graduated.
Furthermore if it is a government job the contacts you make could further your career down the road, you don't want to burn bridges before you even get to the bridge.

Well I ended up turning down the job and going to E3... it was great, but kinda sucked that I lost the job. On the other hand when I got back I went and had an interview with another company, non-government, and got a job. I will be making $5 an hour more than I would have at the other job... so I guess I am kinda like Seinfeld everything always works out for me.
