Will your employer change your hours so you travel at less crowded traffic times?

Unfortunately there is not really any non crowded times. I have to be in the office by 930 for a meeting every day but I get in around 830 so I can leave earlier.

Hell it could be Sunday and 11am and 76 west bound will be backed up, no idea where all these people are going even at odd hours.

Only time I never had any traffic is when I'm required to be in the office at 4am like once or twice every 4 months. I literally fly down the road and make it in 30 min.

What the hell kind of fascist despots hold 9:30 meetings every day?

Fixed.

Having standups at 9:30 is terrible considering most devs don't even like to get in early.
Very true. Every time my project manager is out and asks me to run the meeting I do it in record time, blast through everything or just go around ask people for their progress.

Why can't these project managers just send out end-of-day memos with project status and goals for the following day in lieu of these meetings? What is a manager for these type of teams supposed to be doing, if not keeping track of where the project currently stands and where it needs to be over the next week or month?

Not sure but that's the corporate culture around here. I mean pretty much anyone can do a PM's job if they really wanted to. I hear it's a position that will phase out over time but at least not looking like that where I work.

lol 930 isnt early
Not early for me either, I'm at work by like 6:30. But I'm not most devs either, they like to get in late and leave late.

Having standups should be no earlier than 10am considering most places "core" hours are like 10-2 or 11-3.

And if you're working in a dev job that doesn't allow flex hours, that is even worse.

I ended up putting an application in for the first place in the OP. More expensive rent but it's 15 minutes from work. Right by the park too, has some nice trails and like 5 minutes from the largest mall in US. Did a quick search and they have a gym I go to here in philly over there which is 12 minutes away.

My one friend that lives in that area mentioned his car insurance also dropped by $50 a month in the same area so hopefully that follows suit for me too.

Yeah location is worth paying for IMO (on vacation as well), definitely going to be worth it.

Yea the normal price for a bedroom at this place is $1140 + utilities and I normally wouldn't consider this as something I would want to pay for a place that's smaller/maybe older. But they told me they still have the $999 special on going so I made sure to ask about that when I turned in my paperwork. Everything else in this area is $13-1700 for a tiny one bedroom which is newer/nicer.

But I think if I'm not paying $100 a paycheck for philly tax and my car insurance drops, I should be good.

There's one guy used to live in philly at my job and would come in at like 4-5am and leave by 2. But his job was not depending on any other devs, mainly just environment and MQ stuff.

All other devs that worked on functional stuff show up at 9am. I like going in around 8 so I can leave earlier but stuff happens on some days and I end up staying later.

I get to work between 6-7 and usually leave around 2-2:30. I used to do the normal 9-5 but could never go back to that now lol. I wish I did this schedule earlier on too because it's so much better missing all the traffic and the gym being empty when I go. Then in winter time I get home and I still have day light.

i am a dev and get in at 6:15 every day

9:30 is super late for an office job
I'm an engineer, but I do a lot of development and coordination with analysts. I find that if I come in at 9, I leave at 530. If I come in at 6, I leave at 530. :p

Well I got the new place. Will be moving there sometime early November.

What really sucks is the new apartment complex forgot to send out my acceptance letter so I had to call them yesterday, which delayed me in giving my old place 60 days notice.

My current place wants me to pay the full month of November rent even though I'm moving out the second week. My guess is they will also try and keep my deposit for any little crap too.

They can try, but if such shenanigans aren't in your lease you can threaten with lawyer/court to release your full deposit. I've never had a real issue with getting a deposit back if I just clean--especially carpets--and aren't a destructive pig to begin with. Best to do a walkthrough before you hand over keys and if they don't give you a final checklist, ask for one and that it include an owner/manager signature confirming that everything is fine and that you get your deposit back. ....I never had a problem with this doing it with a handshake, until my last place (temporary 4 month, ~sublet sort of deal) where the landlord walked through with me, everything was great, we shook hands and he was mailing to deposit to my GF (she was on the lease--I was taking over her space while I stayed behind for x months prior to our move to the east), and then he proceeded to make all sorts of claims to her over the phone about filthiness and broken things and trash on the street. All absurdly bogus--yet hilarious considering my dad was there helping me to pack the car and drive out, so a witness. Anyway, never got anything signed on that walk out, but I got sick of his bullshit so I just threatened him with some contact info of my lawyer friend and his firm (he was clearly trying to retain her deposit to fix the plumbing issues and other issues which I had been informing the sketchy landlord over the previous 3+ years. so, fraud, in a way) and he mailed the check that day.

You're probably SoL for the pro-rating November rent, though.

It's a company not a private landlord but I'm far from filthy or dirty and the carpets were professionally cleaned a few months back. My father just didn't give me the receipt from the company.

He was staying with me for those few months when he moved from the West coast so he thought it would be nice to have my carpets cleaned since I was helping him out.

I'm stuck paying full november rent though, at least the new place is prorating it for me.

Good luck with the move. I actually did the opposite ~7 months ago. I moved from close to work, to much further away (now I have a ~30 minute commute in the morning, and ~50 on the way back), and my quality of life outside of work has gone up significantly. Though having a 980 and flexible schedule is the reason I can pull it off without excessive fatigue.
