I am in the Northeast section if philly. The wage tax here is 3.90% but there is no wage tax in the Kop area. Rent is affordable where I am now in philly. In kop it's kind of nuts and the two apartments I listed would be my options if I move where I work.

I'm saying -closer- to KoP, not in it. Cut that 45 minute commute to 20 minutes, say. Something more to the west, maybe? Perhaps just off the turnpike or Ben Franklin Highway.

Living near work is a no-brainer, neighborhood be damned. You aren't buying the place int he crappy neighborhood are you? No--then why are you even considering not moving close to work and eliminating a wasted 2+ hours/day out of your life + costs of gas & car maintenance?

With rent being the same, you are saving hours of dead time and with the ability to walk/bike/cheap PT to work with yuuuge benefits in $$ savings, your life will be vastly improved.

Yea I'm considering it. Paying 1% vs 3.9 is better. Rent in those areas is about the same. Norristown is cheap and out of philly but 2% income tax and not a good area to be in, unless you enjoy smoking rocks.

Yea now it's just a matter of finding an affordable place. My rent will be more no matter where I go. I just like the kop area since thete is no income tax, lower car insurance. But rent in it and the surrounding areas suck.

Sure, this sounds like a first world problem but if those traffic engineers would just synchronize the light for better traffic flow the demand for gas in this country would seriously drop since waste would be minimized.

It's not an accident that lights are not synchronized. Your municipality knows what it is doing, believe it or not. The intent is to slow down traffic and thus help local brick and mortar businesses increase their foot traffic. The second reason is to hope that drivers run red lights, and thus increase revenue for the municipality. Cops have quotas to make on a weekly or monthly basis. I was traveling home last night, well after the 'rush hours'. I made every light on the route. If I travel the same route during the day with the same amount of traffic, I'll be stopped at 1/2 to 3/4 of the lights. There are no coincidences. And they don't care about you using more gasoline. Helps the local gas stations sell more product.

Move to whatever is closest to work and in safe neighborhood and decent building.

It might still mean a shitty commute, but hopefully not as shitty as your current commute.

I commute 20 miles which takes 40-70 minutes depending on traffic (or 3 hours if there is a blizzard and people are blocking the roads with their immobilized stuckmobiles.)

Yea mine is 24 miles if I take the free highway and 32 miles if I use the toll road.

It looks like I will need to compromise and pay more for rent and have a smaller apartment, not as nice too, in order to shorten the commute.

But as long as I'm not paying the local taxes then I pretty much break even.

Bust your nut to buy a place, then. If rents are that much higher than in nearby communities, I'd venture housing prices must also be healthy. It could be tight, but rent rooms to a couple of housemates for a few years and just make it work. How much worse can it be than commuting two hours a day and having no life?

Well worth living a walking or biking distance from work, and in a few years you'll have a healthy amount of equity in a home that's increased in value.

New job won't help, all the jobs are either where I want to move or downtown with the same commute.

The good thing is I'm not on a lease anymore just month to month. I'm going to wait and see what other options I have out that way.

Complexes always say their special rates can change any day but I'm pretty sure they have specials all the time.

I may just pony up paying 1% wage tax in one of the other counties if I find something nice there.

I'm in the short commute camp. I suddenly moved to Saint Louis for work and just took whatever apartment I could. 30 minutes to work and sometimes an hour home if there's a Cardinals game. I just moved literally two blocks from work and it's so nice. I spend more time walking to and from the car than I do in the car.

It's so hit or miss when you talk about moving. I had a super quiet apartment before and my new place has neighbors who seem to party at completely randomly times. 11am on Sunday? Sure. 4am on Wednesday? Why not? One thing I've noticed is that grocery stores in cities suck. It's such a little thing until you go to buy groceries and the selection and price totally suck. We've got a 1% income tax for living in the city plus a 9.7% sales tax. Add to that the increased rent and insurance associated with city living (my car insurance went up like $50/mo).

It's a tough call, but the additional time is really nice. Some people thrive on the alone time with music in the car to "switch gears", but I can do that at home.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you. It's always a stressful situation when you're talking about moving.

Will there be anything you really want to do with that extra lack-of-commute time, and on weekends, in KoP, though? And no, I'm not being snarky... Philly has come a lo-ong way since I lived there during college (the early-mid 80s, when basically all of what little there was to do aside from a relatively few, mostly boring bars closed up shop by 8pm at the latest), but from what I've heard anyway, not so much out KoP way...

Not far from what you experience there. I'm 25 min outside of downtown on a good day, forget working in the city or driving there in the morning, or taking the train when it arrives on time, thanks septa.

Sales tax is 8% here and wage tax is the max too. Other counties have at least 1%, most 2.

I won't be saving much money since rent will be higher depending where I go but with the tax money not being taken out that should cover just about for increased rent.

It's amazing how crappy the apartments are in KOP, for higher rent too. Don't get me wrong they have some nice ones and they have been building new complexes all around my office buildings but all new developments are marked as "luxury apartments". $13-1700 for a 700sq foot room..as if it were the downtown area.

I used to complain that my current apartment is an old folks home but honestly when I do move I'm going to miss it. Probably the nicest and biggest place I've had on my own for the amount I'm paying. The drive just doesn't make it easy anymore. I'm actually going to feel better waking up later and only having a 20 minute drive back and forth.

You drive two blocks to work??
My first job I had I was literally 10 minutes from work. Really loved that I could go home for lunch, play some music on my PC and relax instead of eating at my desk so I can make sure to be on the highway by 4pm. There's a 15 minute window that if you aren't on the road by then, you're stuck like chuck. I'm sure some days he walks the two blocks.

I don't go out that much anymore. I've lived in philly long enough that I've pretty much been everywhere. I stayed since all my friends were here. Now, most of them are finishing up med school, moving to other places. We still get together but not so often.

Besides bars and a few other things, it's liveable. Currently if I want to go to the city after work I still need to drive 30 minutes anyway. Sometimes I get home late and only have time for the gym. If I still went out as much as I did in college I'd probably consider sticking around. Chances are if I got another job, it would most likely be in Kop anyway, at least with my background.

I moved closer to work so I could save time for school. Usually I go to work, then school, then home. I could easily walk it if I wasn't concerned about time, the weather, or being murdered. It's a... shooty... area.

I have never had to worry about the length or time it took for my commute! The guy I employee to do maintenance on my 6 cars also does all the driving for my wife and I! He has a small studio above the garage!

Yea that's another thing. The grad school is right in that area too. If I lived there I probably would not mind going for a master's in software engineering. I'd have to pay out of pocket for some of it as my employer only covers 9k a year but this is a no go with living in philly. I'd get home around 10 or 11pm staying where I currently live.

OK wtf is KOP? And WTF are you being charged a city tax???
Has one if the largest malls in US as well as tons of tech companies in it. Wage tax is charged on income if you live or work in the Philadelphia area. Each employer is required to take it out if you have a Philadelphia address.
