Honestly I don't think 45-60 minute commute is all that bad. But I'm stuck in the bay area california, and the traffic around here is ridiculous.

I would analyze the situation by identifying what you would be doing with more time on your hands.... Would more time and less income allow you to do what you want....

Conversely, perhaps saving up money by staying put and going on a great annual vacation might be more rewarding?

What are your long term plans with this company? Any marriage, kids or home purchases in near future?

If you are young, I would suggest living as cheaply as possible and saving up your money. Invest some, and spend some!

Yeah, see: your perspective is totally wack. :D

That is where I recently moved from (well, year ago now). I didn't commute (unless you consider 15 minute walk a commute), but the commute mentality there is insane.

For me I would be saving a little money even though I would pay more for rent. Car insurance will drop, I'll fill up gas less often now, so I would kind of break even. Not paying the city wage tax also helps.

It's more than 40-50 minutes with traffic. And there is always lots of traffic. I drive stick too so I'm sitting in the car a lot if I leave at the wrong time.

Funny, just go to this thread and I am curious when people to commuting.

Driving 30-40 minutes in no traffic because you live in the 'burbs with a big house, lawn, etc. = Win
Driving 30-40 minutes in gridlock when you live about 5 miles from work = loss

It's all about perception, 40 minutes of driving goes by quickly, 40 minutes of jamming on your horn and ripping out your hair because the same light has just turned red for the 5th time and you still haven't gone through it- no thanks.

For me currently it's like 24-27 miles of lights, then highway traffic where you barely move sometimes.

For example, I came in early today. Left my house at 5:20am and got to work at 6:06am.

Wasn't a bad drive but I was also going fast and there was no traffic.

Anytime past that hour you won't get there for 1hr 30 min or more. Forget going back at 4pm. I usually leave at 4pm and get home by 6 or 630.

I would not mind a commute that's 30 min without traffic all the time.

You guys were right. Finally moved in and it will take me a while to get used to the area and settle in, get new furniture, make the place comfy. But I'm close to all major shopping areas, everything is about 10 minutes away from whatever I may need.

They have the same gym chain I used to go to in Philly but this location just has newer equipment only thing is it feels kind of cramped.

The drive to work is awesome. I can get up an hour later or even 2 if I wanted to be in by 9 but I usually go in by 815 or 830. Takes me exactly 15 minutes to arrive at my building in the morning and maybe 15-20 on the way back home depending when I leave.

I do feel more awake now in the mornings, and generally less stressed if I have to stay late for work because I get home right away.

Not to mention car insurance in Philly, I was paying close to $200 a month for a new car fully covered it's now $100 and some change and my first paycheck also went up about $200 so that's nice too.

Should have moved a lot sooner. Only drawback is hearing my mother complain that I'm so far away now, I'll only visit her on holidays but that's not true because I've been doing that same drive for years so I can stop by anytime I want just not as frequently as I used to.

What happened with the old place? Did they ding you for the full month of November? What I would have done is said: "Give me a break on November, and I'll move out on the 5th (or 6th or whatever) and you have most of the month to paint/remodel/clean and show the place to be rented December 1st." If they said "no way," I'd come back with "Ok, I'll be moving out November 30th. Go fuck yourself."

Yea they did make me pay for the full month of November. I didn't return the keys until this week and I can't get my deposit back until peco sends me my last bill.

My father was visiting in July and August so he had the carpets cleaned. They want a receipt before I moved out to prove I cleaned the carpets right after the move. I told them I had it done a few months back so they gave me the number of the same company my father had called..the complex also uses them.

I have to call and see if they can mysteriously find a receipt from months back. Hopefully they give me my deposit back. Who knows though, it would be nice.

I should have moved out November 30th like you said but the new place couldn't hold the apartment longer than the 12th. At least the new place prorated my rent for the first month and they renovated some things so I'm more comfortable here. Still a lot of cleaning up to do and finding spots for stuff that I should throw out due to lack of closet space, but it's much nicer than the last place.
